    ok i had some bi caronate of soda in water sat on the side in my room. i axxidently knocked a 10p into it last night but thought nothing of it. just saw it now ans its gone brown!!!
    whys it done that?

    Bicardbonate of soda is a base. That's pretty much all I know. If you'd put the coin in something slightly acidic containing citric acid, like Coke, it would be all shiny but I didn't know something happened in the presence of a base. :confused:

    Are you sure of that?

    So it's basically the opposite reaction that would occur in an acidic solution such as citric acid?

    So there's been some oxidation reaction, the opposite of that which would occur in acid?
