There aren't exactly many bones to break in your stomach!

In response to the original poster, this is pretty normal if you haven't done sit ups before/for a while. Your stomach muscles are like any other muscle and will hurt when you do something you're not used too. To be honest you've probably overdone it. You don't need to be doing loads all the time to get a flat stomach, only if you want a huge six pack.

Do it little and often but make sure you feel it doing something ie "the burn"!

No thats fine (perhaps not every day though), but if you want a flat stomach you're better off just going for a run each day and adjusting your diet

Yeh, although all exercise helps, doing sit ups predominately aids muscle growth and while you will sweat a bit i guess, sit ups arent focussing directly on getting rid of any fat.

It all depends on what you are like at the moment:
1) Fat and no muscle
2) Fat and muscle
3) Little bid podgy and muscle

You want a flat stomach? The solution is not by doing situps (unless you did them for a long period of time, which then it would be class as cardiovascular activity), it's getting a proper diet and doing some sort of CV exercise (bikes, running, rowing, etc.). You've probably heard this all before 10^10 times but it's the only way (exception: liposuction).

Your lower back or neck may be hurting my doing situps if your back isn't strong enough to do situps, if it does hurt, seek another ab exercise (if you want strong abs that is) such as hanging hip raises.
Check out the Armed Forces sub forum in Careers where there is a specific Fitness thread full of helpful tips, hints, and fitness plans. By following them you can get fit in as little as four weeks.

although the ache... you ahve to do them everyday... then gradually do more... say 3 more a day... if it aches and you dont do the situps again it wont make much of a difference...

If you're just doing sit-ups, all you're doing is building up the muscle underneath what is probably a layer of fat (I'm not saying you're fat, btw). What you need to do is get rid of that fat by dieting at the same time.
Build up to it. Start off doing 5 or 10 and slowly build up everytime you do it and you'll have a toned tummy before you know it.

that is just lactic acid burning pain on your stomach my friend. Just take a rest for 2 days and get on with it, as you progress there wont be any more pain after you exercise. Of course this is the best way to keep and build muscles but you sould do some more exercises other than sit ups to burn all those fat away

if it hurts the day after then ur definately doing it right!! you just need to do less each day and build it up slowly

I was under the impression that you build muscles from slightly tearing the muscle tissue when doing sit ups/weights and when they grow back, they grow back stronger?

Hence the pain you feel is the muscles slightly tearing, which is a good thing but only in small doses.

Yeah...the pain is a good thing!! It means that the muscles are kinda tearing and they will repair much stronger, and so u will have a firmer and more toned stomach! Woohoo!

No it doesn't because if you do 25 then you wont stimulate growth at all.
All that will do is increase your endurance.

If you want bigger stomach muscles, do reps of 8, for example, with a weight.

If you want a FLAT stomach, then working the muscle won't do much, you need to get rid of the fat on the stomach by burning calories.

This is the 5000th time I have typed this, and I know I'm not the only one..
