go see your doctor or your local family planning centre

Doctors, just ask your regular doctor for them and they almost always just prescribe them for you and you pick them up from the chemist - simple!

Not so much tests as a few questions and your weight, height and blood pressure taken.

It would be advisable to test whether you are prone to thrombosis. It means having blood taken. In Germany you have to pay that privately and it is fairly expensive, about 100€ (around 60-70 pounds), but maybe NHS does that for you.
There are some people who have a genetic disposition towards thrombosis and it is not wise to take hormone contraceptives then. Smoking + pill is very bad anyway but in case of this said disposition extremely unhealthy. I'd advise anyone who goes on the pill for the first time to invest that money.

i have that so i have the implant

Mind you the implant also has hormones (Implanon has Etonogestrel only). In Germany it is hardly used, don't know why though, it's been on the market since 2000. Peral Index can't be given yet, but seems to be high, approx. like pill.

Here a new thing has come up in the last year: a ring (Nuva Ring, no latex) which is full of hormones. It gets put in a bit like a diaphragm and is left in for 3 weeks. The hormones get released and because the stuff does not go through your digestive system (hormones are absorbed through the mucus tissue of the vagina) you need less hormones.
It works similar to the micropill with "Etonogestrel" (=Gestagen) and "Ethinylestradiol" (=Estrogen) not letting any ovulation take place + the mucus in the cervix is less penetrable for sperm. After 3 weeks you pause for 7 days -> bleeding occurs -> start again. You can go on withouut the 7 day pause and forget about bleedings.
Pearl Index: 0,4 - 0,65; slightly less than the pill.

Might be an alternative to people who forget to take their pill on time.

i just went to my doctor & all she did was take my blood pressure - no height, weight, bood tests nonsense....

Reply 14

First time i went they only took blood pressure too. Then i went to one in nottingham when i was living there and they did the whole shebang apart from blood tests.

Reply 15

the only time ive had height and weight taken was pill checks, i had blood preasure taken only on my pill checks. All i had to do was do a menstral cycle calender, noting when i was heavyest and the duration.

Reply 16

I only had blood pressure taken, no other nonsense.

I think some doctors don't weigh people because they can tell by looking at you that you're not too fat.
They should still be checking if you smoke, your family medical history etc though
In my experience nurses are more likely to weigh you. *shrugs*

well it's on the doctor's conscience if she/he gives you the pill and didn't look at you properly/tell you everything you need to know/want to know and something happens (like thrombosis) you could turn round and say "you did not tell me".
So ask as many questions as you can think about, so that you feel you know everything.
