Definitely Brighton for nightlife, and probably shopping as well.

Brighton... I don't really know about Plymouth, but Brighton is awesome for nightlife and things to do in general...

I definitely think you should go to an open day if it is at all possible, or else you won't be certain that the university is the right one for you. I went to an open day in January, the first two hours of the journey were spent driving down the motorway in blizzard conditions, the next four hours of the journey were spent driving in torrential rain. The trip had to include an overnight stay. But I'm so glad I went.

Of course, if you're in a different country, things are made even more tricky!

But, in my opinion - Brighton.

I am at Plymouth university but will admit that Brighton is probably far better in terms of nightlife. Having said that, Plymouth is far from rubbish in that department, there are so many things to do (it is a city afterall and comes with everything you would expect from a city).

As for shopping, I personally prefer Plymouth as it's shopping centre is much better organised and from what I have seen, looks bigger than Brightons. Having said that, I have only spent one day in Brighton so may have missed quite a bit of it.

I would highly recommend that you visit both cities to see for yourself as everyone looks for different things when it comes to determining whether one is better than the other.

Brighton!!! It's such a student-ish place! The shops are good (avoid Churchill Square...), good restaurants and entertainment.

Plymouth is much cheaper than Brighton if money is an issue!! apparently it costs about £100 a week to live in brighton, compared to £60 in plymouth.

Generally, living in Brighton is expensive but as with everywhere, depends where you live and where you look; I have friends living close to the seafront in Brighton who pay £65 per week for a decent house.

Can anyone please let me know some website links where I can see the pics of Plymouth uni (the campus buildings, halls of residence, etc)? I've tried to search it in the uni website but couldn't get one. As I'm an international student I can't go to visit the uni for an open day before applying. So I need to see the pics of the uni before joining there to spend next 3-4 years.

I really don't like Plymouth city, its very grey. Brighton as a city on the other hand is great.
Plymouth is full of chavs in some areas. However Plymouth uni has some really good departments and the city maybe to some peoples taste.

From my experience, I would say the opposite is true. I suppose both cities are big places and it depends where you have been. Certainly around the university and up towards mutley, there are very few chavs because they keep away from all us students :p:

And yep Plymouth has some fantastic departments - all mostly within the biological sciences. Our Marine Biology course is one of the most over subscribed in the country.

Another point to consider is that Plymouth is a campus uni centred right in the middle of the city whereas Brighton is situated out of the city (except for one building).

You could try google search. If nothing comes up on there then the best idea is to order the prospectus from the website as that has lots of pretty pictures!

The buildings are all quite nice. The new bio/med building looks very futuristic and the Sherwell lecture theatre is a converted church (my favourite building). The campus is very clean and modern in general.

Thanks for the brief description of Plymouth uni. I've ordered the prospectus a few weeks back, but it hasn't reached me yet.
Yes, trying a google search might help. Moreover, I've just watched a 30 sec intro video clip, downloaded from the uni website. The campus buildings seem to be nice and most of them have modern looks, unlike other old unis in UK.

According to the experian retail ranking 2004 Brighton is 18th best place to shop in the country (just behind Edinburgh and ahead of Bristol) and Plymouth is 29th so Brighton is better for shopping.
There are lots of funky independent shops in the north laine area of the city which most students love as it's a very bohemian area and very young.
Nightlife of course is fantastic in Brighton, anything you're into you'll find it here, good gig venues, lots of restaurants and a very cosmopolitan mix of people, you'll love it here as a student.

I would probably have to agree with Brighton being a better place, but a) they didnt do the course i wanted and b) i didnt want to go to a uni so close to home...

So here i am at Plymouth, and it is a very good place, i havent actually seen many chavs (not as much as back home) so i guess its down to where you would prefer to go.

Just wanted to stick my nose in and say that I've been at Plymouth for 5 years now and I'm loving it. There are new bars popping up all over the place, and the live bands that play down here are great. The Junction is my favourite haunt at the moment and the live music they have down there on a Friday and Saturday night is real good.
The Cooperage is hot too!!

Shopping is good, and much cheaper than London (where I'm from). A new shopping centre is on its way too.

The beach is right next door and so are the moors. There are ski slopes, ice rinks, marine aquariums, beaches, rally tracks, go carts, restaurants, bars, clubs ...............

If you don't beleive me go to www.plymouth.ac.uk where you can find video clips and comments by students and everything.

im unfamiliar with the word chav???

ive applied 4 both unis, but im more keen on Brighton as it looks better (check website)also its higher in ranking for my subject which i think is most inportant rather then nightlife tho i cnt imagine a place like Brighton 2 av poor entertainment, like its one of uk's best tourist attractions part frm London course. I suggest checking your subject ranking. I feel Brighton maybe harder 2 get into 2 so i'd count my self lucky.
