Taking piano to uni...

You're going to hate living in halls with that attitude, trust me. 4/10 of us in my halls play instruments regularly and even when none of us are playing there's always someone above doing so. Unwanted noise is something you have to deal with yourself because you can't keep going round telling everyone to shut up; no one will like you then.

As for the OPs question, does the piano detatch from the stand at all? Do you have another digital piano without such a large base? I think that will be the only problem you encounter (getting it through your door could definitely be tricky).

I'm going to hate living in halls? I've lived in halls for two and a half years. I'm not there to be liked, but incidentally I get on fine because I handle it calmly and we compromise when there is a high level of noise. But the wardens at my university don't like instruments being played in hall.

I feel sorry for the rest of your flat then, unless they're all as boring as you.

Oxley has music practice facilities on the premises by the way.
Why not just take a keyboard?

Depends totally on the size and shape of your room... you could probably fit it but it might get in the way, then again if you're a musician you will miss it alot! I suppose its about a balance.

As for the whole 'should I ' thing, I don't see anything wrong with it. If you were going to play it really loud, at night time, or disregard people asking you to quiet down then yes it would be wrong. But I can't imagine you'd do any of those things.

I can only speak for my own uni but they wouldn't mind an instrument at all, unless other flatmates complain about it, which if you're good with it, they should have no need to. They only generally care about keeping everyone happy.

It'll annoy the **** out of everyone

Why? If they don't see her move in with it, and she uses headphones, how will they even know?
If you can fit the piano in your room and carry up it any stairs then bring it. I have 2 electric guitars, 2 electric basses, an acoustic guitar, 2 guitar amps(15W + 30W) and a bass amp (15W) in my residence.

Just use commonsense, which seems to have been lost these days.

Dont play late at night and if people are revising/working wear headphones or play at a volume where people cant hear you.

I would say wait to bring it though, wait until you have been at uni for a few weeks, you will avoid having extra chaos on the day you move in, nothing will happen to it during freshers week (plus you shouldnt have time to play during freshers :-) ) and maybe you will find out you wont need it with you because facilities are more accessable than you realized which saves unnecessary hassle of moving a piano!
I emailed them and they said that they had no issue with people bringing instruments to uni and that I could ring up Oxley residences manager with regards to room dimensions and practise rooms.
I'm taking one with me! I don't think it's at all pretentious, I don't think I can go that many months without playing it that's all!
I've applied to Devonshire so hopefully practice rooms too....
