I prefer the union nights compared to the clubs.
If you don't like tiger tiger type clubs, then don't go to Embrace.
Maybe try Plug or Leadmill? They have indie style music.
If you like rock, metal, indie then Corporation is best for that.
West St is full of lots of bars and it's 2 minutes away from the university. I'd recommend you check that out first before you head off to a club.

Thanks for your help. I was concerned that the Student union nights wouldn't be open as most students might have gone home for easter?

Ah yes, just checked out their website.

There isn't much on at the moment because of the Easter break.
Defo check out West St though.
Maybe even take a trip to Meadowhall if you fancy a spot of shopping?

I don't think this week will be particularly representative of normal Sheffield nightlife! We went out last week for a few drinks because a flatmate had a friend up, but loads of people have gone home for Easter... West Street was quite dead (apart from Soyo).

The union nights won't be on, either. I can't say I'm a massive fan of Corp and Leadmill...

I'm not a massive fan of Corp or Leadmill either, but people seem to love going there. I went to Corp my first year and didn't go back lol, I'm in my final year now. Lots of people tend to go on a Wednesday because it's free entry?
I quite like corp - takes a bit of getting used to but its not bad at all!
The union is always dead busy, often selling out. Its a guarenteed good night out in term time

I love Propaganda which is the indie disco on Fridays at the O2 academy. Admittedly the venue isn't amazing for a club night and drinks can be fairly expensive but the music they play is the best and it goes on until 3:30 also. If you are pretty drunk beforehand it is awesome.

Other than that, I'd recommend Plug on a Thursday for Jump Around, think that is the best club in Sheffield tbh. 3 different rooms, biggest one plays crap chart music and 2nd one does indie and alternative, never been in third one really. But Cheeky Vimtos are two pound, Carlsberg is a pound.

Leadmill was good when I went in Fresher's Week but ever since it's always been dead quiet and I've always left early and gone somewhere else.

Corporation is good if you really don't care about what a club looks like, incredibly cheap drinks but the place is really a dump. Best to go at the end of term when you have literally no money but still want to go out...

Embrace I'm not a massive fan of, don't really like the music played and it does look a bit cheap in there.

Union nights are also really good  Love Pop Tarts on a Sunday but that is pretty much the only one I go to apart from special events, really need to get myself down to Roar at some point!
Corporation might be a shout for alternative though it is actually genuinely filthy like no other club I've ever been in.

Leadmill is more indie and actually clean.
Plug and Leadmill are pretty much the same place! (although I prefer Plug)

They're both large and have a main room and an 'indie' room - Plug also has a small D&B room. I've heard good things about DQ, especially Club Pony which takes place there every second Friday (an eletro night). The Union is also a good night out and well... Corp on a Wednesday is just about the cheapest club in the world although be warned: it can lead to a very messy night. As far as bars go, West Street offers quite a bit of choice; my favourite would be Bungalow & Bears.

There arn't any clubs in the accomodation but Endcliffe has The Edge, and Ranmoor the Ridge which are bars near the halls.

The union is great, and holds club nights 5 nights a week, with comedy nights on the sunday.
There are other clubs which tend to attract a mix of Uni and Hallam students.

I'd rate the nightlife as 8 out of ten. There are some good clubs, the Union is amazing (I can totally see why it wins best UK Students Union quite often). Obviously there are less clubs than citys such as Birmingham, London, Manchester, Liverpool. There is a lack of super clubs such as Gatecrasher or Oceana.

Well the main clubs are probably half hour walk from accomodation but most people just tend to get taxis.

I'd say that Sheffield Uni's Union is much much better than Hallams but apart from that the nightlife is essentially the same as people go to the same clubs.
While I do like going out on big nights out sometimes... I'm not a massive fan of doing it every week. Are there a lot of smaller venues like nice studenty pubs and bars which do live music and just have a nice, chilled atmosphere? In Cardiff there are a few really nice places like Milgis, Gwdihw, The Promised Land and Buffalo, and I just want to make sure there'll be a good choice in that sort of stuff, too.
Anyone know what Boardwalks like? I'm meant to be going to a gig there soon, but really not sure, the website makes it look a bit crap tbh.

It is small and looks a bit scruffy but is good for gigs, love the atmosphere.

Cheers
So there seems to be no lack of clubs and venues, but what about chilled out, relaxed pubs, once in a while those places serve a purpose, any idea if there are any nice ones about?
Sundaygirl91
Heya, I'm coming up to Sheffield with a friend this week to see if i like the city before firming it on ucas. I was wondering what night would be best in terms of liveliness, and also what clubs you would recommend. I prefer more alternative music, and i'm not really a fan of massive 'tiger tiger' type clubs.
Thank you!!

For more leftfield indie check out long-running indie night Offbeat - first one is on Tuesday of Freshers week tho' it's generally on Friday nights. Held in the Raynor Lounge, a small venue off the main student bar (Bar One). It's a bit of a cult institution, and a very friendly night of real indie music lovers - loads of info, playlists and stuff at www.offbeatsheffield.com
