hi jashan how u doin? to give you a brief history i got 10a*s gcse, 3As for a level and went to medical school. i failed my second yr and was asked to leave. i have now applied to kings for biomed and have got an offer. i will be starting in september with the intent to do medicine afterwards. just had a few questions about the course:
1. how hard is it for one to get a first class degree in this course? e.g. what is the workload like?
2. when applying for postgraduate medicine afterwards at kings, is a kings biomed student given preferential treatment over a biomed student who didnt study at kings?
3. do u know any other people in my situation.

i would appreciate any advice given

1. Workload isn't too bad i'd say, some modules hurt more than others. If you've done 2 years of Med school it probably wouldn't be too strenuous for you. I would say I haven't worked as I hard as I could and am on course for a 2.1, so if you put good effort in you could get a first.
2. Very slightly i believe. At the end of 2nd year you submit an internal application for King's medicine, but all this does is tell you whether you're assured of interview or not - you still have to submit KCL on UCAS form and it still takes up one of four choices. I wouldn't say there is massive preferential treatments, just have to work hard and do lots of extracurricular stuff as you would at school.
3. I think I may have met 1 person who went down the same route and is now a king's medic after being a ucl medic but generally of the 450 or so people in Common Year One a large proportion will be looking to apply for medicine after.

hi thanks for your advice. just wondering aswell:
does the course spare enough free time for one to get involved in the student life at uni?
are exams purely at the end of the year or are there ones in the middle aswell?
do you get alot of time with your personal tutor?
do you have the same personal tutor for all the three years?
do postgraduates apply for the 4 year gep course (medical) and how successful are they generally?

thanks

You seem to know alot. I have a question. I came to do my a-levels in UK from Germany (long story why I came). My problem is that Im not gonna meet their entry requirements for biomed. This year I finish my A2, but havent applied yet. Iam going to apply sep 2011 for 2012. If I retake any modules in Jan2012 to obtain my minimum requirements, will they still take me, because I've heard that they dont consider students who took more than 3years of A-level.Please help me

1) Biochem A was the main chemistry related topics, wasn't too hard and essentially just a bit more detail than at A-level.
2) Biochem B was genetics and although I found it boring, it is straightforward.
3) Practice if Biomed is statistics, but really only covers about 10 or so lectures.
4) From Cells to Systems is the structure of tissues at the microscopic level and was interesting although the practicals were a real drag.
5) Pharmacology was great. Not too hard, interesting and engaging.
6) Physiological Systems was quite good, basically learning about the systems of the body. CNS, Muscle, carciovascular etc. This exam was quite hard though.

For the first year I used the following books:
1) no book needed, the lecture notes were good enough (attendance quite key for these) Recommended textbooks don't add much
2) Essentials of genetics by Klug. Very good book and if you miss lectures, this book will make up for it
3) This is only statistics and some other miscellaneous topics. Only lecture notes, as there aren't any specific books. (attendance key)
4) Wheater's functional histology. very good and has most of the pictures used in the lectures
5) no book needed. lecture notes enough.
6) Vander's human physiology. Good book, maybe too detailed in some aspects for the first year, but it still comes in handy in the second year.

Hi, saw your old post and have a question regarding biomed at KCL for a family member who received an offer but is know worried that he will have to do a research project in his 2nd/final year and is a root she is not interested in going down (hopeful grad-dentist he is) is there an option of just doing modules etc Also how much lab work do you do?

In final year you need to a project. But, this is either a research project OR a library project. So depending in the modules and final year project you take, you can get by doing little/no lab work in second and final year

can a first year student describe a typical week to me please? (how much time do you spend doing lab work)
Bump

Hey guys just wondering if me getting A*BB would get me into the AAB offer I have for KCL biomedical sciences? I've had so many conflicting reports :/
Also, what is the likelihood of being allowed to study abroad for the second year?

Thanks
