What's an EPQ?
Can anyone do one, or just college students?

It stands for Extended Project Qualification and all you have to do is choose a topic of interest and write a 5000 word essay on it, i think its for alevel students not sure though, visit the aqa website theres info on it

How about the use of amalgam in fillings, and whether there is actually any evidence of harm from the (toxic) mercury which is in the amalgam?

the steele project is basically a 80 page review of the current nhs dental system in the uk by professor jimmy steele of newcastle univeristy. its jsut got points on what the problems are with the current nhs system and what can be done to improve it. im doing the epq as well on dentistry, got the presentation this wednesday!, but basically do what ever interests you in the subject. e.g implants, forensic dentistry etc

good luck hope it goes well for you, just out of interest what was your epq on?

erm i did my epq on the evolution of dentistry. one of my friends in my form whos also applied for dentistry did a project on how forensics are used to distinguish dead people by examining teeth or something. when do u have to actually start the epq?

presentation was pretty good!, just waiting for my grade now. one piece of advice i would give to you is to start doing research after your exams, cos it really takes along time gathering info!

Hi there I too just did an EPQ on "what is gum disease and is it linked to CHD" it started when my dad got gum disease and me and my dentist wanted to know how to get him to brush his teeth properly so I googled "effects of gum disease" and CHD came up - so i decided to do a project on it. Admittedly it was really hard to find anything more on the link and most of the dentists i asked just refered to it as a grey area of dentistry so most of my projected ended up being about gum disease and how that works.

Its really worth while just google a few things that make u interested in dentistry (maybe unanswered questions from work xp) and see what kind of contreversial stuff comes up - as even though my project didnt go as planned, i had crap loads to write about in my evaluation and ended up getting a good grade! It helps quite a bit in interviews too - having something to show them.

Hi

I'm also doing an EPQ also on dentistry. Im thinking of doing it on "the evolution of dental materials".

I would really appreciate any tips or advice on possible topics.

EPQ topics for dentistry include history of dentistry, amalgam fillings, fluoridisation of water.
The people I know who did an EPQ had to include surveys and interpretation of data/conclusions along with their research. If you want to include these elements you could do Diet and Oral Health - this could cover both acid attack and also the effect of nutrition on teeth. I suggest this as a topic because you could do a survey that explored what eating and drinking habits people had and whether the were aware of the impact on oral health.

Thanx v much for your reply,

The "Diet and Oral Health" suggestion is probably one I am most inclined to pick as it interests me the most. The only thing thats possibly keeping me undecided is the fact that I'm not sure if its a big enough topic to speak a lot about, bearing in mind it is a 5000 essay.

Would appreciate any advice.

Thnx once again.

You can bulk up your words by doing both primary research (and commenting on your results) and secondary research. You can also go at tangents (e.g. looking at oral health in different nations where diets differ) and of course interpret data out there. Another way you bulk up words is by explaining terminology used e.g. what is acid attack.
If you aren't sure I would do some initial research and then decide. You won't waste time because it would be useful for you to have an understanding of the effects of diet on oral health before interview and before you start dental school.
