PCl5 will replace both OH groups in the molecule :yes:

How would the full equation look ??

A bit like this

CH3CH(OH)COOH + PCl5 ----> CH3CH(Cl)COCl + stuff

you will need to balance this and work out what the stuff is

The "stuff" being:

POCl3 + HCl

Hence...

CH3CH(OH)COOH + PCl5 ----> CH3CH(Cl)COCl + POCl3 + HCl

I left that for the OP to work out :p: You have 6 chlorines on the right and 5 on the left.

Ooops :smile:

I didn't see the dichlorination of the reactant.
I thought I saw a monochlorination.
My eyes have failed me. :smile:

Actually hang on, can you please explain why both OH groups were replaced?

I thought PCl5 would only perform nucleophilic substitution only on the OH group of the carboxylic group...

Oh wait, I understand the reason now. There was an excess of phosphorus pentachloride. That's why all the OH groups got murdered.

In that case, what would the end products be?
I'm guessing what's left over are 2OH, and PCl3

Just use two lots of PCl5 on the left and balance the products on the right :smile:

Thank you EierVonSatan :smile:

P.s. by any chance do you like this band called Tool? I can see some sort of resemblance form your username :biggrin:
