Writing my notice - Need some help

I have to give at least three weeks notice and I am wondering if someone can just look over my first draft. I have never had to do this before.

Dear Mr. X

I regret to inform you that I will be leaving the employment of Showcase Cinemas as of the week ending Thursday 15th September, in order to pursue a music degree at the University of Bangor and I am giving you one months notice of my departure.

Yours sincerely,
A Musical Gal.

Ok, that was rubbish....how's this?

Dear Mr X
I am writing to inform you that as I will be shortly attending the University of Bangor, I will be unable to continue working for Showcase Cinemas.
I am therefore tendering my resignation from your company and wish to advise you that Thursday the 15th of September will be my last day of employment.

Sincerely,
A Musical Gal

Yes I know but I need a good reference.

Ah yes, a good reference is always good.

I know I can rely on my old job that I gave up in Feb to give me a great reference if I ever need one. I got on really well with the manager and still do.

I think it's always a good idea to add something a little less formal at the end, so that the employer-employee relationship ends on a friendly note (for reference reasons). So, just add that you've enjoyed your time working for them, and that you wish the company all the best in the future

Yes excellent idea. I wrote on the end of my resignation that I'd really enjoyed my 2 years there etc.

My mum took it and added stuff and adjusted it. It sounds good and its sealed and ready to be added in tomorrow.

The cinema is going through a bad patch where they're are losing staff left right and center so I being polite and giving 1 weeks extra notice.

It sounds fine. You have said why you are leaving and it is a valid reason- as long as you have given them your contractually obliged notice they have nothing to complain about. Just make sure that you have put a date on your letter of resignation.

are you sure you need a letter? where i work we tell our manger who then gives us a form to fill in it takes like 10sec- Name, Why you leaving? Dates?... thats it!

(you really couldn't make this stuff up!)
