Hello! I'm doing the same course as you at LMH starting this october. Was wondering, what are the rooms like for first years? Are they large and do they have en-suite? Also what is the food like on the whole? Cheers!

Rooms for first years can vary. I had a pretty large room on Toynbee ground floor (possibly the largest fresher room) but Toynbee ground floor is the central corridor past the bar and the jcr so everyone walked through it so we didn't build up much of community. I think deneke rooms are cool. They're reasonably smaller than most rooms in colleges but most freshers end up here so you'll have a lot of fun here. (The deneke roof space rooms are better furnished but smaller). Wolfson west rooms are reasonably average. Count yourself lucky lynda grier rooms are now being converted into the law library. Freshers will end probarbly end up in these buildings. Unfortunately most of the en-suite rooms are in the tower blocks which have already been taken by 2nd and 3rd years. To be honest, rooms for freshers won't be the best in college but from what I've seen, they're better than at other colleges.

Food. The prospectus says that the food served in hall is considered to be some of the best served in uni. If that's true then I'm scared of what food is like at other colleges. Honestly, it's alright at times but not great. There's usually a decent selection, salads, hot meals, desserts etc. Not much really to comment on food tbh.

Looking forward to meeting you guys.

Cool, thanks for that. Another question if thats ok.. how many (roughly) hours of lectures and tutorials do you have a week? And how many hours of your own study time are you expected to put in, say in a day?

i cant answer the first question ebcause i'm not there yet, but isn't the second question kinda like asking how long is a piece of string? it depends on the work your doing and how you find it.... i think you're expected to put in the hours between lectures that are necessary to understand the previous lecture, hte previous tutorial and prepare the next lecture and tutorial...

10 hours of lectures and 2-3 hours of tutorials. And whatever independent study time it takes really, but normally in the 15-25 hours range I reckon depending on your commitment or ease with the questions.

Actually, I was a little surprised by the mandatory meeting with the dean/president/(I can't recall the specific title)...I'm used to that person giving a speech at the beginning of the year and then being basically invisible for the rest of the time. Other than that, I can't say that the schedule is all that different from the other orientation programs I've attended...as it happens, I'm going to be missing the international students' orientation since I'll still be working. I haven't heard anything from the politics department at all--honestly, nothing since my acceptance letter--and it may be that there's a good deal of departmental orientation. Apparently, I will be spending my first week just setting up a bank account!

Yeah, there are two mandatory meeting aren't there? With the president and with the tutor for graduates. They'll probably just be a couple of minutes to say hello, which seems a bit pointless really.

Haven't heard anything from my department either, apart from a letter asking me to confirm that I still wanted to take up my place. From the sound of things, the LMH MCR is pretty small anyway, so maybe they'll actually be more people in the department than all the grads at LMH.

my one was very offensive...still going i think:biggrin: It's called "God sucks"; typically controvertial, especially on account that there are many crank god believers out there, hehe.

Science rocks...NO SUCH THING AS GOD  If i was around in the 15th C and said that publicly i'd probably be beheaded:eek:

So you are red_shift86  :vroam:

I haven't given my two cents in that thread (weren't you under fire from atheists & agnostics too?), but there have been a few other controversial threads and some very interesting debates. Try debating with St Thomas Aquinas  - he would be a worthy opponent

Not necessarily, someone I know at Cambridge said their tutor wanted them to put in at least 6 hours a day of private study in the library or whatever.

On a side note, I've been informed that I'm the only one doing maths and comp sci this year at LMH.. :frown:

That's not really much of an issue as you'll just have maths tutes with the mathmos and comp tutes with the compscis. It can be good to have a variety of tutorial partners and helps you get to know the year quicker. There'll be other people from your college going to the same lectures as you.

so your the girl that dk was talking about...he said you were a girl!

Oh, just out of curiousity, does anyone who's been at LMH know AJ Lacert? Sort of a heavier American guy. I think he might be doing compsci or maths, but I really don't know. He should be in his third year.

I wouldn't assume anyone would, but it seems likely that someone in maths would know who he was at least.

what is Jerico blocks? is it that new place? that place were building work was taking place in december?^o)...near the library?

As has been said, Jericho is an area of Oxford. I assume you're thinking of the two red blocks? They're not new, but one was being refurbished and fitted with new windows last winter (the other had been done last summer I believe). Mostly 2nd/3rd year students live there - fairly large rooms with en-suite pods. The majority of 1st years end up in Deneke, which is the biggest block. Most rooms don't have any "facilities" as it were, but are a fairly good size. Those in "roofspace" are smaller but recently refurbished and have sinks (there's a couple en-suite up there too I think).

Yeah, Texan Arthur. He's doing maths and computer science. Don't really know him very well. He's going into his third year this October.

Yeah, he went to my high school when he was in Texas. My curiousity is now satisfied.

Hey hey, it's crazy Dan!

Hows your summer been?

Erm, kinda freaked out by that. Especially when the word crazy is used. Can't believe how people can say use that with a straight face now. Don't suppose you wanna reveal who you are? Since it's impossible to tell by your profile.
In answer to your question. Summer is alright I supposed. In hong kong at the moment so kinda bored. Probarbly the reason why i'm on the TSR.

Ah don't worry, I'm pretty sure you know me. I'm an engineer in your year, and my initials are on my profile. You often used to wander past my room in Deneke with a box of Cheerios. I'm sure you can work it out from that!

Fair enough, I'm at home in the middle of nowhere and similarly bored!
