World Universities Ranking - Sheffield Vs Sheffield Hallam

Well, today Sheffield announced on their website that in the 2005 "Academic Ranking of World Universities", it's situated very nicely at 65th in the world, making it the 8th best university in the UK.

Some of you may remember this study being in the newspaper a while back (This time last year I believe). It's done by some Japanese people and is based on various factors including;

Quality of Education Alumni of an institution winning Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals Alumni 10%

Quality of Faculty Staff of an institution winning Nobel Prizes and Fields
Medals Award 20%

Highly cited researchers in 21 broad subject categories HiCi 20%

Research Output Articles published in Nature and Science* N&S 20%

Articles in Science Citation Index-expanded, Social Science Citation Index, and Arts & Humanities Citation Index SCI 20%

Size of Institution Academic performance with respect to the size of an institution Size 10%

Total 100%

Okay so it's very science based... But still... It makes comforting reading.

Sheffield Hallam isn't even in the top 500. It's a weird survey because unis like Durham come below Sheffield, and Hallam isn't even in the top 500 whereas somewhere like Surrey is, and that's not that different to Hallam. Weird.

hehe... my mate Sam's just finished her 1st year at Hallam. She said that it is her duty as a second year student to "corrupt the bloody fresher" (ie me). God knows what she means, but it sounds interesting nonetheless...

my boyf has given me greif for the last year about me going to hallam...(he was at Sheffield Uni for his first year) but now he's going to have to eat those word because he too will be attending Hallam in september. mwhahaha talk about karma

I'm sure you will enjoy the corruption!! But because freshers are so innocent and unaware (no offence to any of you but you will know what i mean when you see all the freshers when you're going into your second year!!) It is a known fact that older, students will try and take advantage, some see it as a huge game to 'bed a fresher' so be warned!!

It was something i was warned would happen before i started uni. I had a bf so it wasn't a problem for me, but i saw it happening. If you listen out, ie arround uni and in shops, even in pubs and on the street, you will hear people (usually male) boasting about the freshers they've had that week. It does make shocking listening!

I don't know, just the men i think. I was in a club once in the frst year, and towards the end of the night guys who hadn't managed to pull were walking round the room stoppping at every single female in a last hope attempt at being able to take someone home with them. This was in the Leadmill, so i suppose its to be expected, but i was sat down with my friends so we had a clear view of the saddos in action. It was laughable to be fair. One tried it on with both me and my friend at the same time. the stuff he was coming out with was hilarious. He was using chat up lines that are so cliched no one in their right mind would fall for them! Needless to say his attempts got him nowhere, but that kind of thing happens on a regular basis. but once you're aware, its something you can watch out for and see the funny side of. When you've had a few drinks seeing someone so desperate going from girl to girl can be hilarious, a bit like a by product of Jerry Springer or something!

Well my lovely mate I was on about, Sam, who wishes to corrupt me... is a girl... and I'm a guy, so girls must be at it too...

But hey... I'm not complaining!
