Prepairing to achieve distinction at LSE in MSc Econ

I am going into the LSE MSc Econ Research program with the goal of getting into the LSE PhD program. To get into the program, I must achieve a distinction when I finish the MSc. If I don’t get the distinction, I don’t get to stay at LSE, so there is a lot of pressure to perform!

That is why I am wondering if there is anything I can do now to prepare for the program. I want to be able to successfully absorb the material presented in the MSc and I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions. I have picked up Mathematics for Economists hoping that getting familiar with the math behind the models I will be studying will prepare me for the economics courses I will be taking during the school year. I am also thinking of looking through the textbooks LSE recommended me in my acceptance letter.

Has anyone taken the MSc Econ program at LSE? Can they suggest a good plan to prepare for the year?

Hopefully if I prepare well, I can have a very rewarding learning experience and have some free time to enjoy London and all the countries at England’s doorstep!:woo:

I would suggest taking a lot of econometric modules also, from the people I've talked to doing Msc's (one at LSE), the most challenging aspect to most people is econometrics.

I would work at your spelling. Every mark counts.

Not sure I understand the terminology but here goes: So you're on track 1 hoping to go onto track 2?

Choose your modules carefully, I guess. The Mres courses are supposed to be significantly tougher than the regular MSc's , so loading up on Mres' doesn't sound like a good idea. You're given the basic requirements -- what you're expected to know. Only you know what areas you think you'll be weak in and what areas you think you're confident in.

I second that.

hahaha, sorry about the spelling! I guess that is why I am getting into economics, not English literature!

Thank you for the tips! Does anyone have any specific knowledge of the topics covered in the Msc? Maybe someone knows where I could get a syllabus?

Thanks!

It's all on the website.

Macro: http://www.lse.ac.uk/resources/calendar/courseGuides/EC/2009_EC413.htm
Micro: http://www.lse.ac.uk/resources/calendar/courseGuides/EC/2009_EC411.htm
Metrics: http://www.lse.ac.uk/resources/calendar/courseGuides/EC/2009_EC402.htm

And the 4th course is optional.

I think Bigdan1010 is on the MRes programme so he should refer to these guides instead: Macro, Micro, Metrics.

The thread title would suggest he is aiming for a distinction in his MSc Econ...so the MRes level courses would be the year after?

It would be helpful if Bigdan stated what 'track' he's on. Has he done the equivalent of masters courses? Given the questions he's asking, I'm not even sure he knows. :p:

Well he did mention he's doing MSc Economics Research which is the title for LSE's MRes course... You have a chance of progressing into Phd from the MSc or MRes if you get distinction overall (which is hard and very competitive) - I assume he's not on the 1+3 track yet. Let's see Bigdan's response as I agree with your last statement there  .

I am in the Msc program basically, but it is tagged as "Research" because if I get distinction, I will automatically proceed to the PhD program.

I am aware it is going to be very difficult, so I wanted to start looking over things now to build up my intuition.
