Missed offer by one mark!

Hi,

I had a conditional offer at LSE with grade requirements of AAB, with an A in Maths. The course was Maths and Economics (GL11).

I obtained an A in maths, an A in economics, and missed the B by one mark in physics (419/600).

I sent an e-mail and two letters to LSE between yesterday and today; where one letter was written by my Principal to support my candidature. This was what was advisable for me to do so.

I was dubbed 'Unsuccessful' by LSE tonight, once UCAS updated their tracking service.

I have also sent all three of my Physics modules for re-assessment on Edexcel's 'express' service, which should take between two to four weeks.

It is merely a matter of one UMS point, or 0.2%, which determines this entry into my first choice.

Any advice from fellow TSR'ers would be highly appreciated.

Thanks for your time.

THAT is extremely unfair ^o)

Definitely go for the priority remark, and just hope for the best.

Did LSE see that you just "got a C" or that you were one mark off a B?

Reply 2

Yeah, nothing better to do than hoping for the best.

Any university simply sees which GRADES one has obtained. Hence, in my letters and phone call(s), I made it a point to highlight the fact that I was simply one point off my requirement, which they must have understood.

In fact, earlier in the year, I'd received conditional offers from all six of my choices, including two different courses from LSE itself. I find it quite odd for them to not even justify such a decision.

Is anyone else in a similar situation?

that is very unfair  . If lse have said unsuccesful on ucas track then is there no chance of accepting you. Does that mean you cant even appeal beacuse they have officially rejected you or can you hopefully still phone them and try and persuade them ???

A friend of mine who applied last year was in the same predicament. He actually flew to London from Toronto, Canada and setup an interview/meeting with the head of the program as well as the registrar responsible for his admission. He argued his case and after some 2 hours and a decision to allow him to write a challenge exam, he was admitted in to the faculty. I don't know all the details surrounding it, however, it seems as though - if you were one mark shy - there is something you can do, just continue to argue, write letters and even (if you can) visit. Best of luck.

if you are remarked by the end of August (and you meet the offer) they have to take you this year, if it's after that time (and you meet the offer) most places will offer you deferred....

I have till the 30th of September (as told by LSE) of this year to be allowed re-entry, if my marks DO change and I meet the offer. I feel there is absolutely no doubt they can't take me in at the earliest if an improvement in my Physics marks does occur. There is no way I should suffer a punishment made by Edexcel...if that really is the case.

Very interesting.

The thing is, I had sent in a total of three letters and two e-mails to the institution, yet their decision was negative and not in my favour. I have paid LSE a visit as well, but the undergraduate admissions team clearly state it's against "school policy" to meet any one of the decision-makers.

I would greatly appreciate if you could possibly get me the contact details of this friend of yours. It'd be excellent to hear him narrate his story, knowing that someone has been in such a similar and unfortunate situation as myself, and come out victorious.

Many thanks.

I know the "school policy" bit... a friend of mine missed his offer to UCL by four marks and also got rejected! :frown:

I can actually feel for him.

Did he miss the marks in the subject he was going to pursue at university?

I find it strange how LSE can be so non-cooperative at this point. I've maintained an excellent academic record, with 5As last year. People should have the heart to realise unfortunate things can happen, and when it's just a matter of ONE mark...sheesh.

I dont know... he's doing Land Economy or something of that sort... he's going to Sheffield now...

I'm waiting for ICL to answer me... I got AAABb and their typical offer is ABB but they asked me A in Maths and Physics and B in Business... but as i got a B in Physics they are reconsidering me and I'll now by monday! Why do they make higher offers and specifying subjects than the typical ones? :frown:

Precisely...quite unfair. Well done on acheiving your grades though, very decent indeed.

Kitsune, Im in the same position as you, applied to imperial for MMath needed AAB in maths, f maths and physics but got AAACa with the C in physics, another A in chem and A in AS level economics...still waiting for a descision..

Thanks! I'm sorry you are not going to LSE by now... hopefully your physics gets to a B!

aniguchisan, I sympathise with your unfortunate position but I can also understand the School's cold shoulder to you.

Very few students understand how the Government funds places for UK and EU students at university. The Government will review a university and allocate it a maximum number of places it is prepared to pay for. Any students that join the School above this number will not be paid for by the Government.

A university will give out more offers than it has places. This is because not everyone will accept the offer or some will accept but fail to make the grade. Obviously this isn't a science but largely guesswork. Inevitably situations will arise where more students accept their places and achieve the grades needed than expected.

Last year the School accepted over 100 UK and EU students on undergraduate courses above its quota. The only money the School received from these students were from their tuition fees if they paid any. What the School is doing is giving free education to those students who dont pay tuition fees and are above the Government quota of places that its prepared to pay for.

So you can understand why the School is being so strict with you.

I think the only way you're going to get in is if your grade change. If not then I doubt you'll get in.

No, I spoke to the admissions tutor on thursday, she said it was very oversubscribed and probably wouldnt take anyone who didnt meet the offer, although was still deciding on mine because i got AA in maths and f maths. I decided to get a remark in physics cos im only 4 marks off a B so i emailed her and told her that....havnt got a reply yet.
