If you do get a distinction do you have to get a scholar's gown, or can you just carry on using your old one?
don't think they can 'make' you spend money. but if you plan on accepting invitation to Foundation dinners etc. you'll look a tad silly not wearing one..
Do you have to be officially told you're entitled to one or what?
think so, yes. because it doesn't officially seem to be automatic - still at tutorial board (or whatever equivalents) discretion.
"Foundation" = president, fellows, tutors & scholars. though that's not an official definition from anywhere - just the impression i've got - basically academic-y people paid by the college, methinks.
so these dinners are the ones that only those people get invited to - in our case it's the restoration dinner & an oration dinner as i remember. when they usually crank out the 'class A' alcohol & serve amazing food. a couple of those is more than worth the cost of the gown!
but the whole thing might well be college depenedent.
use your oxford-place-winning-intelligence to interpret whether you think yours qualify as "dark"..?
Simon - elsewhere they just make you buy a ~£50 gown without giving you nice food? or 50p on the first sunday of lent due to some archiac bequest..
They sent me a cheque for £50 the other day - that was nice and quite out of the blue ... I mean that as in unexpected, no pun intended. Ouch on re-reading that, unexpected is one of our album titles - I just can't avoid the puns can I
post 66 asks that question. post 67 gives the general rule but post 68 a warning about what happened to those who did this year. do they not answer it for you..?
this forum malarky tends to be a 2 way thing of reading & responding..not just posting questions.
One girl got fined for having odd socks. Harsh? I think so.
That's got to be against human rights... freedom of speech? Plus if yu spend 1050quid on your education for a year, dammit, you can wear any socks you darn well please!

& now we could communicate by smilie semaphore..
:withstupi :wtf?:
Yes, they are a level of communication higher than speech. Why am I doing a languages degree?
Elles, I can feel myself already transforming into you already, tutting at those asking if their 6 A* GCSEs are good enough, sternly but politely pointing out that the admissions deadline isn't until October, and that admissions tutors simply don't care about what you're wearing or how you do your hair. What's become of me?!

lol- i think all the people going up to oxford this year are turning into this, realising how stupid we all sounded last year when things like the suit/smart casual debate and buying brand spanking new cufflinks/shoes (males/females) seemed of vital importance to your application! People worry way too much about their gcse results- do the admissions tutors really care whether you got 6/7/8 A*s, surely there are much more important considerations!!
