Edexcel AS level history: How to analyse in history essay?

Classic story did really well in GCSE got an A but came round to AS level and well got an E :frown:

I really need help in term of analysing, bascially how do I know if I'm narrating too much? I think this was the main reason why I ran out of time. I mean you have to say some of the points right? So is it like you say a point and explain it, but if so how to do fast so you don't waste time?

I really need help with this, I'm doing Unit 1 Civil rights in the USA and Russian in Revolution. Unit 2 Poverty and public health.

Retaking unit 2 which is a source based exam.

Unit 1 is the more essay style one, but during my pracises I always fall short because of time!

Could someone like give an example of analysing whould help if its with my exam board but if not, its ok.

BLOODY TIME AHHHHH! :eek3:

Thanks

plan to do intro, three paragraphs, and conclusion. For each paragraph take the main point from a sorce and explain then contradict/support with one point from each other sorce, repeat for each source. That way you get all the comparisions and the own knowledge is in the explanations so you dont talk too much about it, then if you feel you have time you can write as much own knowledge in the conclusion (which can be 2 para) and you wont loose analysis marks due to waffling but have shown what you know. I did AS Edexcel last year got a U retook both units and got a B so good luck I'm sure you'll do better. Remember to include dates and names (sounds obvious I know). If you want my old essays your welcome but the units options are different (unit 1; fascist italy and fascist germany and unit 2; 20th century conflict) so let me know.

"Not only did the slump intensify the hatred of the Weimar Republic, it highlighted the fundamental weaknesses in the constitution. The proportional representation system lead to Parliaments with upwards of 30 parties, this consequently lead to difficulty with regarding forming Governments. A clear example of this is the collapse of the last true coalition government of Muller, in which refusal to lower Unemployment benefit, or raise Taxes as the DVP wanted, lead to the SDP pulling out, and the collapse of said coalition. "

"Economic distress played an extensive role in the rise of extreemist parties in Germany. In 1924, shortly after hyper inflation, but whilst Germany was still experiencing the harsh consequences, Nazi support rose to its at highest at 24 seats. However, by 1928 things have begun to recover and reduced again to 12. This role was seen again in 1930, when Nazi support rose to 107 seats, and the communists 77, just after the collapse of Wall Street. This clearly demonstrates the role that economic distress has on the voting intention towards extremist parties"

Make your point, evidence it, explain its consequences. Just like GCSE English.

Hope that helps

:eek3: I'm doing exactly the same modules...

Got A* at GCSE...haven't done mod 2 yet, but for 1...you just need to know general events and why...expect the summer exam to be easy after the bastard questions in jan......

in history...******** is your friend...got me 90%

in the source based exam...anything that shows a different view, or anything that you can justify will get you marks....and remember...state the bloody obvious..it seems stupid, but the amount of people that don't is silly

in my experience, the intro and the conclusion make or break your grade in general

Soz for double post!

I hope they make the June resit and Unit 1 easier. But thanks, is it ok to pick out things in the soucres that may not be written in the mark scheme. For example, say if a source has something that could be used for and against, but you already know that this source is meant to be one sided. Could you still analyse it in the way you wanted to?

@Flaga: Thanks also, I guess you don't have to dictate everything on a single event, just pick two and explain it in context of the question right? Or wrong?

Exactly, but I mean, not just two, as many examples you can think of to support your argument as well as those that don't, as well as picking out what in the sources that support your argument dont, and those that don't support your argument do :P lol.

Regarding the other thing you mentioned, not sure what you mean but, if you mean, say you have a source from the German foreign office in 1938, and it makes it clear that Poland is completely safe, and therefore you know it isn't reliable, but you can back up a point that was something on the lines of in 1938 Hitler had no intention of taking Poland, then that is fine.

With History you can argue anything in any direction, but you must evidence it.

Sorry about the poor example there :P

The mark scheme will only contain the really main points, and as history is sooo stupidly subjective, any point you make, as long as it is relavent and can back it up, WILL get you marks...

Wow, you make it sound so easy, well GCSE grade now feels like a waste. The essay style won't work at As level so I guess I'm just gonna have to learn. But, I still don't mind helpp! lol
