I want to go travelling during university summer hols...

i don't know anyone who has travelled during the summer holidays whilst still at university, only know people who did it after Alevels or after graduating from uni. I would love to do some travelling during Summer 2011 but more than a typical 2 weeks holiday - i'd like something for about 5 or 6 weeks, like the South African schemes I've heard about. There's also BUNAC but I don't want to do the support worker camps so much.

Can anyone help me out or point me in the direction of some info i can read up on?

Thanks!

My friend went to America for about 6 weeks and met her boyfriend out there. A lot of people do it, and why not. If you find something, go for it!

I'd like to do it too, the main limitation being money. Although I'm thinking Indonesia + PNG for 10 weeks next summer will be doable. At least the info on Indonesia says £12 per day outside of Bali/Jakarta is plenty.

Sorry to hijack OP, but to those at uni and who travel (for 6+ weeks) how do you save up for it? Everytime I look at uni costs they seem to go up..

My friend's organised something through sta travel. They're really good for students, most uni's have one nearby. Or check out their website. She's going to Indonesia, Thailand and some other places in SE Asia. Costing about £2000 though - no idea where the money is coming from, probably her parents!

Student loans weren't solely meant for ''uni purposes'' . . . . . . .

I have gone travelling every summer between university. If you are very careful with your last student loan payment (and with exams on there isn't really much to send it on) then you should be fine booking somewhere. I would avoid any of the packages offered by companies. Just find where you want to go and book a flight there and sort everything else out when you get there. Any advice on more specific places please ask.
