Im in derby!! wahey. lol, i really dont think rooms are too luxurious at all...bt it will be cool, adds to the fun! Im moving in on the sat, waho.

Also anyone know what the communal bits are like in the flats? How big are kitchens etc. Is there like a sitting area and that. I have no idea.

Thanks x

you don't get luxury for 55 quid a week (or whatever it is)

your flat is what you n your flatmates make of it with posters etc

if you're on the ground floor the kitchen is a hell hole, really. no windows, completely square. gets really warm. got tw@tted in there by a frenchman too lol

lounge is okay, fairly big, you get 5 "comfy chairs", a couple of coffee tables (one derby flat set theirs alight this year, charged 75 quid for it!), and a big table with 8 chairs. just add plants and posters and you're away!

upstairs is waaaaay cooler, hence the reason i specifically asked for upstairs this year! open plan lounge and kitchen, with WINDOWS! YAY!

derby rocks in its retro kinda way, army green doors, with army stencil numbers, yum!

all girls are upstairs! yes i shall be next door, or maybe opposite, can't remember, either way lucky me :p:

plus you don't havta worry about getting fined for leaving the fire doors open upstairs coz there aren't any

pretty much all flats are single sex. mainly postgrad flats that are mixed. i should imagine there will be much interflat mingling, espesh in the first few weeks when everyones having partays.

max sharing is 8. people drop out, get thrown out, or just leave coz they're only here for a semester though. we had 8 then 7 then 6 last year!

Can you tell from the flat number whether you are upstairs or downstairs? Because my number is somewat above 50, I think 58. OOh, I am so relieved that there are more people going to the Derby house  Thought it wouldn't be fair to be left at the halls alone while other are getting drunk at the parties

Is there no-one around going to Burleigh house? It sounds small. Anyone got any info on that house in particular? Also, how tall are the ceilings in the rooms? I'm 6ft 5" so i'll probably hit my head on the eeves every time!

 Just had an immense burst of excitement on realising that we move in a week on Saturday. Dilworth is going to roxor my soxors! (I hope, if its a bit naff I may weep) Also, how are there 23+ flats in one house? (I'm in flat 23)

Onward Comrades! For threadbare heroics will get us nowhere!

they are very long houses

you can't really tell from the flat number. there is a system to the numbering but it makes little sense. might get a copy of the map thats shows them all for next years freshers on here!

as for ceilings, i'm 6ft and was okay! it depends where your room is physically in the building. some rooms have sloping ceilings, which i like - more cozy, but you might smack your head on them, frequently

oh and burleigh - think it is one of the smaller houses, don't remember meeting anyone from there last year

EDIT number 2 : at the risk of being a crossposting whore, i'm gonna repeat some things i've said on newstudent that i think are pertinent

a. the first 15 minutes in halls might be the worst - i thought it was a right sh*thole when i first moved in, plus moving stuff and getting keys etc can be stressful. let yourself get settled before making any judgments

b. knock on the flats around you and say hi to everyone. it makes everybody feel better and you'll meet cool ppl.....like me

just two things that just sprang to mind - hth!

I put on my special needs that I was 6ft 5" hoping to avoid height issues. When i rang up they said "we've noted your medical condition"! I reckon I've been put in special needs house. There is a girl on newstudent who says shes going there so I'm not alone.

Reply 91

lol medical condition?!?

they probably will have put you in a non sloping room then! just watch for the slope in the lounge!

DI17.136 means i'm on the 17th flat?i'm on which floor?

anyway,i'll be totally alone in manchester since i have no friends going to our university.is there anyone taking economics+social science course in dilworth house?

hannah, when to ikea buy so much stuff,i thought the max weight is 30kg..do you still have place to include your plates and etc?

btw,is dilworth house a lousy one?i heard it's very old.

can i move in earlier?i have no place to stay from 13-15sept because i'll reach on 13th but now only i realise my contract start from 15th..silly me..gonna be homeless for 2 days

You people are all so lucky. I lived in whitworth park for 2002-2003 academic year. I had the most fun ever. The bar is cool and playing footie out on the pitch in the weee small hours was fun. I was lucky cos I got a huge room. (Garstang flat 3 room 18) anybody got that? - thats an upstairs flat which was really good. I met my girlfriend who i'm still with down the corridor and have loads of happy memories.

The location is great both for going out and rolling out of bed into uni.
The only snag i ever came across was the supermarket situation. We went to asda in hulme quite a bit, but since man city have moved ground, i imagine its a lot quicker getting to and from sainsburys in fallowfield on a sat afternoon.

Good luck to all of you starting there. The best advice is enjoy it, its an absolutely amazing experience.

if i remember rightly 17 is on the upper floor, and will b very close to moi - 15!

take it you are flying to manchester then? you'll be able to buy all kitchen stuff when you get here, don't worry!

dilworth has been refurbished in the last few years, don't know who told you its old and lousy?! basic, yes, lousy no.

ring the accomodation office and explain your situation. they should be able to sort you out with something for the 13th-15th.

Reply 95

today and tomorrow is a public holiday.i have one last day to inform the uni which is monday because i'm leaving on tuesday.

drawmesmonkey,do u really think the accomodation office can find me a place?i really hope so..i dont want to be homeless~

it seems drawmeamonkey(15th),hannah (14th),annmary (17th)..we're all very closeby.
should come out for a tea sum day.

drawmeamonkey, regarding the internet connection,do i need to get a network card?coz my laptop have a wifi thingy and i'm not sure whether i can connect onto the uni network.

Reply 96

well last year, quite a few people had to move in early, due to geography field trips and international ppl like yourself coming early for orientation. worst case scenario, they'll put you in touch with a hotel.

tea sounds good lol

i would imagine your laptop also has an ethernet socket. if not, yes you will need a card, but worry about that when you arrive. everyone will get a network cd-rom that explains everything.
