Oxbridge

There's no minimum amount of GCSEs at each grade that you need, but since you want to do medicine and that's one of the most competitive subjects, having mostly A*s and the rest As would be a good start. Most people do 9. 10 or 11 GCSEs. Try to get A*s in the most important subjects, ie maths and the sciences. It may be more important at Oxford because they only interview about 80% of applicants, whereas Cambridge interview almost everyone. You'll need 3 As at A-level and obviously good AS grades will help a lot. Apart from grades, you'll have to write a personal statement, your school will write you a reference, you'll have interviews and you'll have to sit the BMAT, so there are many more areas that are just as important.

The by college/by subject figures at Oxford are available at
http://www.admissions.ox.ac.uk/colleges/adstats.pdf

haven't look at that for a while, but just noticed, rather prominently in the left hand side you-should-notes:

4. The admissions process for Medicine is centralised so that differing ratios from one college to another have no effect on your chance of being interviewed or being offered a place.

& still people keep freaking out online about whether they should apply to college X because it'll be easier? *incredulous*

i perhaps think a can-this-applicant-read-&-interpret-the-prospectus entrance exam should be implemented before an application can be submitted...

edit - Kelly, not sure who you're talking to, but Oxford only interview something like half that % for medicine these days.. more like 2.5 per place, apparently. so GCSE & BMAT are pretty damn important to guarantee your name on that list.. http://www.medsci.ox.ac.uk

subliminal message - don't let the 9.6 put you off!

i wasn't making a big deal of it but that's still two years away from applying - and I did answer your questions...
Dont worry just about your grades, Oxbridge look at a lot more than just your exam results as they are looking for a rounded student who will be suited to the Uni and the course-not just one that will be able to pass. Try your best to get good grades but work hard on other aspects of you application also, for example make sure you UCAS personal statement and references are strong, and maybe read around the subject or try and get some relevant work experience. I am going to start my first year in Cambridge this October and having gone through the process id say its about a lot more than grades!!!

Remember if you're doing Medicine you won't be able to start until you're at least 17, if not 18.

that sounds quite sad to me really.. focus on the present first - or the future probably won't be what you're hoping for anyway. & you might as well have fun on the way there..

Don't want to dash your hope but don't get too attached to the idea of going to oxbridge. Its not easy to get in and although many people have a fantastic time there its not going to automatically change your life into something amazing. Also if you get rejected thats four years dreaming dashed
