I love lyrics.. it's the English student in me

"Midnight's calling, are you close behind?
Trees without leaves and notes that don't ring
Wine left to rot, and a voice that can't sing
And hours of making love in sadness
and a light that just won't shine in the darkness

    (...)

She scolded me for my sinful and wicked ways
Towered above me, do you follow?
And watched with concealed pleasure as I ripped out my heart and said "I'm just bad I can't help it.. but I'll try to be good" "

    (tis Razorlight.. Fall Fall Fall)

'I fought against the bottle, but I had to do it drunk' (Leonard Cohen). I love this line

Would also post a couple from Bob Dylan, but there are too many to great ones to only pick out a few

"I got soul but i'm not a soldier" All these things that i've done by The Killers surprised nobody's mentined that one already!

"Start to breathe and fake a smile
Its all the same after a while
I know, that you are tired
    Carrying the ones you lost
A picture frame with all the thoughts
I know, you hold inside" Come Back Down Lifehouse

"Could you let down your hair
    Be transparent for awhile?
    just a little while
To see if you're human after all
Honesty is a hard attribute to find
When we all want to seem like
We've got it all figured out" trying by Lifehouse

    "Half in sunlight
    And half in shade
    Words in collision
    I bend to your shape
I see the skull beneath the skin
I see it all" Overthrown By Tom Mcrae

"Like a snake eating snake you confuse me
    Who's killer ? Who's captive ? Who's free ?
In a city that kills by constriction
Throw your streets around me and squeeze" Draw Down the Stars by Tom Mcrae

Perhaps because a) it's not a good lyric at all and b) it wasn't invented by The Killers, indeed people had said it, even sung it, before Brandon Flowers was even born?

    Anyhoo, good lyrics:

But now we move to feel
For ourselves inside some stranger's stomach
Jeff Mangum (Neutral Milk Hotel) - Oh Comely

And one day we will die
And our ashes will fly from the aeroplane over the sea
But for now we are young
Let us lay in the sun
And count every beautiful thing we can see

Jeff Mangum (Neutral Milk Hotel) - In The Aeroplane Over The Sea

And its a lie that you've been given
    It just hurts you everyday
So why should I lay here naked
When it's just so far away
From anything we could call loving
    Any love worth living for
So I'll sleep out in the gutter
You can sleep here on the floor

Jeff Mangum (Neutral Milk Hotel) - Song Against Sex

Follow me through this city of frost-covered angels
I swear I have nothing to prove
I just want to dance in your tangles
To give me some reason to move

Jeff Mangum (Neutral Milk Hotel) - Gardenhead/Leave Me Alone

These walls are paper thin and everyone hears every little sound
Everyone’s a voyeurist, they’re watching me watch them watch me right now
They’re shaking hands, they’re shaking in their shoes, oh lord don’t shake me down
Everyone wants to move them and half of everyone else moves around
It’s been agreed the whole world stinks so no one’s taking showers anymore
Laugh hard, it’s a long ways to the bank

Isaac Brock (Modest Mouse) - Paper Thin Walls

Since I dont have the time nor mind to figure out
The nursery rhymes that helped us out and make a sense of our lives
The cruel uneventful state of apathy releases me
I value them but I won't cry every time one's wiped out

James Mercer (The Shins) - Saint Simon

    And we are vagabonds
    We travel without seatbelts on
We live this close to death

Colin Meloy (The Decemberists) - Here I Dreamt I Was An Architect

I know, I know my time has passed
I'm not so young, I'm not so fast
I tremble with the nervous thought
Of having been, at last, forgot

Sufjan Stevens - They Are Night Zombies!! They Are Neighbors!! They Have Come Back From The Dead!! Ahhhhh!

It was a crime I never told you about the diamonds in your eyes
Black Heart Procession - It's a crime I never told you about the diamonds in your eyes

    EDIT: Oh, and -

    All I ever wanted
    All I ever needed
    Is here in my arms
    Words are very
    Unnecessary
    They can only do harm

But now I’ve the most charming of verandahs
I sit and watch the junkies, the drunks, the pimps, the whores
Five green bottles sitting on the floor
I wish to christ, I wish to christ
    That I had fifteen more

    Damnit! More!

    In this time of introspection
On the eve of my election
    I say to my reflection
God please spare me more rejection
'Cause my peers they criticize me
And my ex-wives all despise me
Try to put it all behind me
But my redneck past is nipping at my heels

    -Ben Folds Five, Army

Come on along with the Black Rider
I've got just the thing for thee
Come on along with the Black Rider
    I want your company

    I'll have the veal
    A lovely meal
    That's how I feel
May I use your skull for a bowl

    -Tom Waits, The Black Rider

We got no-necked oilmen from Texas
And good ol' boys from Tennessee
    And colleges men from LSU
Went in dumb. Come out dumb too
Hustlin' 'round Atlanta in their alligator shoes
Gettin' drunk every weekend at the barbecues
And they're keepin' the ******* down

No worries. If you haven't got any of his songs I'd recommend downloading the whole of that album, it is very underrated in the UK.

I can see by your eyes, it's time now to go
So I'll leave you to cry in the rain,
Though I held in my hand, the key to all joy
Honey my heart was not born to be tamed.
So goodbye, so long, the road calls me dear
And your tears cannot bind me anymore,
And farewell to the girl with the sun in her eyes
Can I kiss you, and then I'll be gone.
    - Tom Waits

In the white room with black curtains near the station.
Blackroof country, no gold pavements, tired starlings.
Silver horses ran down moonbeams in your dark eyes.
Dawnlight smiles on you leaving, my contentment.

    I’ll wait in this place where the sun never shines;
Wait in this place where the shadows run from themselves.

You said no strings could secure you at the station.
Platform ticket, restless diesels, goodbye windows.
I walked into such a sad time at the station.
As I walked out, felt my own need just beginning.

    I’ll wait in the queue when the trains come back;
Lie with you where the shadows run from themselves.

At the party she was kindness in the hard crowd.
Consolation for the old wound now forgotten.
Yellow tigers crouched in jungles in her dark eyes.
She’s just dressing, goodbye windows, tired starlings.

    I’ll sleep in this place with the lonely crowd;
Lie in the dark where the shadows run from themselves.
    - Cream

    Hello.
    Is there anybody in there?
Just nod if you can hear me.
    Is there anyone home?

    Come on, now.
    I hear you’re feeling down.
Well I can ease your pain,
Get you on your feet again.

    Relax.
    I need some information first.
    Just the basic facts:
Can you show me where it hurts?

There is no pain, you are receding.
A distant ship’s smoke on the horizon.
You are only coming through in waves.
Your lips move but I can’t hear what you’re sayin’.
    When I was a child I had a fever.
My hands felt just like two balloons.
Now I got that feeling once again.
I can’t explain, you would not understand.
This is not how I am.
    I have become comfortably numb......

    If you're so charming
Then why are you on your own tonight?

    "I Know It's Over"

It's so lonely out on the limb
    "The Queen is Dead"

    Love is natural and real
But not for you, my love
    Not tonight, my love
    Love is natural and real
But not for such as you and I, my love

    "I Know It's Over"

(As Antony said to Cleopatra, as he opened the crate of ale:
    "Oh, I say ---")
Some girls are bigger than others
Some girls' mothers are bigger than other girls' mothers

"Some Girls Are Bigger Than Others"

Sweetness, I was only joking when I said I'd like to
Smash every tooth in your head

    "Bigmouth Strikes Again"
