Today is the anniversary of the eruption of Mount Vesuvius, which buried Pompeii and Herculaneum under feet of ash. Do you feel that we have progressed in our ability to deal with natural disasters, or do you feel that they are just as unpredictable as ever, and we really can't do much about them?

The only thing you can do is try to avoid them, and that is all that should be done. Let's not start trying to plug up volcanos or superglue fault lines together please.

The best way to avoid them? DON'T BUILD SETTLEMENTS NEAR THEM. And if you do build near them, then just accept the risk of being reclaimed by Mother Nature.

You're really into anniversaries of things, aren't you?

Avoiding natural disasters no, dealing with the aftermath, yes.

    Yes.

    No, obviously not.

Not them themselves, but the above two points go someway to counteract this.
