Nine months on the issue has simly been brought to my attention once again by people on this board and in the news.

So, basically, your friend's over it, and you're not? Jeebus...

I was referring more to the fact that you posted exactly the same thing as me, seconds before I did.

 Quick as a tortoise, me...oh, hang on... :p:

Don't start telling me that hardwork and talent alone, without guidance will match those who have talent as well as guidance, because that view is narrow-minded.

What has that got to do with it? Oxford and Cambridge know the background of your school when you apply. If you are really interested in learning the truth, read this: http://www.admin.cam.ac.uk/offices/admissions/athandbook/

No I am not annoyed simply because this happened to her, but because it happens to others as well, every year. And it isn't fair. And no I didn;t get rejected, I apply this year. And no I am not afraid I won't get in, but there are many this year who won't get where they want (oxbridge or otherwise) due to an unfair system.

Again, why post this in the Oxbridge forum, and not General University Discussion, then?

It's the principle...and the fact that I was in a bad mood after reading about a other such seemingly good candidates in the news when I started this thread. But since I have cooled down now, I might just give it a rest...

Why get annoyed about the 'principle' if it doesn't affect you?

EDIT: Incidentally, when you apply this year, will you be applying for either Oxford or Cambridge, what with their *horrendously unfair* admissions procedures and all?

Why get annoyed by injustice if it doesnt affect you? How selfish.

Why get annoyed by injustice if it doesnt affect you? Oh I don't know I thought we all did

Injustice? Actually, your friend's school would have received feedback from the college, detailing why she didn't get an offer. Might it be that there was (I know this is shocking...*gasps*) a REASON for her rejection?

Oh my she who can tell the future. No oxbridge are not on my list of choices. In fact Durham is one of my main choices.

No they didn't give her a reason which is part of the reason why it seems unfair.
I wouldn't apply to Durham. I know someone who was rejected once.

I didn't assume anything, so the first part of your statement is misguided, unfounded, and frankly, unnecessarily sarcastic. And Durham are likely to be far more unfair than Oxbridge, incidentally.

Chiron, I hope you find the admissions procedure is fairer to you than it appears to have been to your friend. I still think there could be more to her situation than you have been told, since I know that Cambridge take great pride in interviewing virtually all their applicants.

EDIT: Just realised you don't intend to apply to Oxbridge. It's a shame that you would ignore great universities based on flimsy evidence provided by a friend who has been hurt by the system and may not be being completely honest with you.
Chiron

Maybe not *her*, but her school would have received the letter. Whether or not they divulged the information is at the school's discretion, but a reason would have been given.

"Incidentally" I don't really have a choice do I, considering that most of the universities have a similar system. Nottingham is another of my choices. The fact that i will be affected by the system next year gives me good reason to complain about it.

The case of your law friend is interesting. Did this person ask for any feedback/reason from cambridge why they were not offered an interview. At this moment the only reason I can think of is that this person didn't actually do very well at the LNAT...but you seem to think that they did (although you cant be sure). I would be suprised if cambridge werent willing to give a reason for not interviewing this person at all. I agree that by the sounds of things they should have got an interview, hence I am confident there was a valid reason for cambridge not interviewing...I would be interested to know what it was. Why dont you try and find out?

Without having been through it? That's complaining without sufficient foundation, surely?

See...that damned system again.

I know someone who got in once. Shall we argue about how much more your friend deserved it than mine, or do a detailed critique of the *perfect* Durham student?

You don't have to have gone through it to know how it works. That is ridiculous. I didn't say it would work to my disadvantage, I just said i don't like it. You don't have to experience everything to make valid observations about things.
