Press ups r excellent for chest and some tricep development - u can bring ur hands in closer and wider 2 work different parts of the chest. situps for the gut and u can purchse these types of elastic that u stand on and curl with for bicep development.

But in al seriousness - join a gym - maybe not a body building gym but a well known gym where the hardcore don't train.

Go once at least...

a) the induction will be free

b) you'll see that absolutley no-one pays any attention to anyone there

personally i havent got the patience to do weights much, do more cardio stuff, but try it out. I only started because i was told i shouldn't swim again and 1 year later i still go every week!

GIVE IT A GO!
Go for a jog
I don't know how to use any of the equipment, will they show me the first time?

Yes, in fact they will probably insist. Everyone is a newbie at some point, hope you give it a try!
don't go to a gym at all if you're not comfortable doing so, because you probably wont end up doing it regularly.
instead, try finding a sport or some other type of exercise which has a social element to it as well- something which can be done "for fun" as well as for a workout. if you find one you really like you'll be able to stick to it and meet lots of new people as a bonus :p:
hope this gives you some ideas

I am extremely shy so that can be tough, I think that I will be okay if I can break the initial barrier of going (very hard).

I am pretty average appearance wise, used to be a stick but now appear to be fit but in reality could really improve my fitness level.

Why are you shy of going to the gym? I'm a member atm, but that's only coz I had to over the coldest part of winter, where jogging at subzero temps wasn't so appealing

I can't wait till summer when I can start swimming!
Adelaide isn't that cold, how does biking sound to you? I love it
bike ridinga long Linear Park is good. rock climbing, jogging, swimming ect
I can't ride a bike.

I guess I am worried what others will think of me even though they probably don't care at all. :frown:

Get some free weights, argos do some good iron ones.

Get an exercise mat.

Start by doing the usual. bicep curl, forearm curls (both muscles), shoulder press, tricep extensions, pull up rows (to work the back), and also do bicycle crunches (they are proven to be the best ones)... You can work on legs later unless they are really skinny.

Work out about 3 times a week MAX, don't over do it... 500 crunches is not as beneficial as maybe 20 well done cunches where your exhale completely.

Keep reps between 8-10, 10th one being the one where you cannot go on. Keep the movements SLOW AND CONTROLED.

You should see results pretty quick (I know I did!)...

When you get stronger consider getting a bench (argos again do good ones)... and start working on the chest...

Working chest out without bench:

Pushups: possible the greatest no weight exercice. Make sure it is controled and properly done... straight back and engaged abs. Can make it harder by putting your feet on one staircase or box or getting someone to place a small weight on your back and keep it in place. (push ups also work out triceps to a high degree)

Another exercise you cna do anywhere is by clasping your hands together (as it you are shaking hands with yourself) and hloding the clasped hands in front of you at chest level and then pushing them together as hard as you can, you should feel your pecs contracting... hold it for a while ten relax and repeat...

That is all the comes off the top of my head... also try skipping in your garden for cardio.

well its a confedence problem you have, gym is nice it encourages you to do exercise as all people are exercising, there are trainers who will help you ,and it is their job to show you what to do:wink:
Ok, I know quite a lot about this, coz I am actually lazy to go to the gym. First, i think it is not bad if you can pick up for urself a diet and manage your own food ration for a day. Hree are some useful links http://www.weightlossforall.com/calories-fruit.htm. here you can find many useful advice about food,
here you can find some exrs that you can make home http://www.cdc.gov/nccdphp/dnpa/physical/index.htm and you know just try to use your imagination, coz evrth that you have around you in ur house, can help you to lose weight. For exaple yuo can make exer with a chair, putting arm on it and trying to sit on the floor. (actually dunno how to explain better)...u can also make some exerc for your tights when you are in bed, just pull ur body up and down, while you are laying on a back. Good luck!

get a beginners dumbell kit from argos, you can do plenty of exercises with a single dumbell. personally I dont have the motivation to do exercises at home, when Im at the gym it makes it easier somehow. I can always go a few more reps for some psychological reason at the gym.

my advice is to go there, dont pay any attention to other people cos trust me, they aren't paying any attention to you. each person goes and does his own thing and you dont have any reason to be shy. simple stuff, dont leave weights on the bar, dont talk to people when they're doing something, get off the machine if you aren't using it, obvious things that are more common sense than anything else and you'll be fine.

I'm pretty sure that every gym you go to will make you have an induction session. I've heard this is compolsory at most places. The main reason being so that you don't cause yourself injury from using their equipment wrong and then suing them  Their defence can be "well, we did show you how to use it properly...."

I'm exactly the same, the idea of joining a gym freaks me out a bit. But I've found a small, q1uiet one near me which I'm goign to force myself to join. Just do it and don't think about it too much, I'm sure you'll be glad you did it in the end. And if you don't like it, you can always leave. Good luck
