Perhaps the prison should get a wicket gate installed...
(Castle has a MASSIVE 400 year old door at the entrance, that serves the opposite purpose to the prison door (to keep people out rather than in), and yet, there is a little tiny door cut into the massive one (like in Lord of The Rings), which you have to go through in order to get in, if you're visiting the bar. I suppose it stops really tall drunks getting in though...)

WOW so many replies!
First of all thanks for the advice etc! Really is appreciated!
I havent been to see Durham yet, cos it's so far away from me - so if i get a place, Ill look forward to it!
Im not sure about sharing a room...what if you didn't get on with the person? Am i right in saying that you may have to at Hatfield, St Chad's, St John's and St Hild and Bede? I would, of course, love to go to Univ. college, but its so hard to get into, isnt it? Do they pool students at Durham, like at Oxbridge? So if you apply to an oversubcribed college, you still have a chance at another place?

Thanks!

Dan

PS Looking forward to the Blue gates....

Grey college is built out of recycled plinths, fact fans!
Oi! You're just jealous because Grey has the HIGHEST percentage of applicants to places in the whole university! Ner ner ner-ner ner! And I don't remember seeing any 60inch TVs in your JCR last time I was there, in fact, some of your poor souls couldn't even hook up a playstation to your feeble thing! :p:
As far as i can tell, the best thing to come out of Trevs was Chris Neville-Smith!

"HMP Durham remains in service to this day and as a maximum security prison houses some our most dangerous criminals."
I actually heard sometime last year that Durham prison was under review or something because they've had too many prisoners escaping (which is why every now and again there's a helicopter circling very low).
I don't know how many shared rooms there are at Hatfield, but when i was living in I was quite surprised by how many single rooms there were. I ended up in one in Kitchen Stairs  but all the rooms in Bailey House and most in PG(or the ones i saw) are single too.

Kathryn had to share with two other people though, although her room was massive and cool! *It had it's own fridge!*

Judith is online now:wink:

Right PG rooms are quite big actually, and i liked the one my friend Emma lived in. Not too sure about Church Street though(which is just over the road and slightly nearer college) Kathryn does, as i'm sure she's been there.

Everyone i knew in PG didn't mind the distance, and said it wasn't far anyhow... and to be honest, it would be handy living in PG if you're coming back from Planet hehehe.

Asides from that, don't believe the stereotypes fully Hatfield is not overtly rah and not everyone does sport!

Have Hatfield told the Freshers yet that Kingsgate bridge will be shut until the 7th October, cutting PG and Church St off from the rest of Hatfield.

Have you not heard of Mo Mowlam MP (RIP) who was a Trevelyan graduate?

Are you serious? Well, maybe as an international I can pull some strings to get out of that... at least it's only for a little while...

Ooh, ooh! If you want to go to Castle, apply!! Don't be put off by the high applications/places ratio! They let me in for god's sake! Honestly, apply, because if you get in you'll love it! Also, yes they do 'sort of' pool applicants at Durham, however, unlike Oxbridge it's the department that accepts you, not the college, so if the department decides they want you but there isn't any room for you at your chosen college they will move you into another one.

OOH I would love to go there....what were your GCSE results, AS results and A2 predictions??
Cos if its so competitive, i'm worried my grades won't be good enough

GCSE 2A*2A 4B and a C
AS AABC (something went wrong in Eng, but im getting it sorted out!)
A2 Prediction AAA
What do you think?

Che, it really depends what you want to study. But with those grades, and a good PS.. Id say your in with a shot for any Durham college! Go for it.
Since when did Grey have the highest number of applications per place? As far as I'm aware, it's always been Castle that has the highest number, with around 15-16 then Hatfield with around 8-9. Hatfield is a heck of a long way behind Castle in terms of applications per place, and thus Grey must be even further behind.

I have to say. I thought that was the case too. Isn't Castle the most "difficult" to get into? With the highest number of applicants per place? I dont think Grey will be up there in the highest...
Applications per place is somewhat of a false indicator of how hard it is to get into a college. If everybody who applies to Durham, some without a chance of getting in, not knowing much about it puts down Castle or Hatfield, then it doesn't really matter how many applications per place there are. What would be a much more useful indicator, is how many *appropriate* applications per place there are. (I.e. if loads of people without a hope in hell of getting in (to durham or these particularly choosy colleges) apply to Castle, Hatfield and the other 'popular' colleges, then it makes it look a lot harder to get in than it actually would be for someone who was a suitable candidate. This is not to say that suitable candidates don't get turned away, but it may not be as hard to get in as it seems).

But I mean they are the most popular colleges. All these bright eyed, bushy tailed sixth formers who are sadly disillusioned of living in a smelly old Castle...

I admit that's what I thought too but I'm certain I read/heard it somewhere. Apparently it was attributed to us having the shortest walk to the science site.
Perhaps it's the most popular hill college, that I can imagine, and think to be possibly true.

To clear up some stats:

The figures are for 2002/2003 Admissionssion Cycle which is the most recent published... (slackers arent they!)

Applications by College:

No Preferance (Open) - 6469
Castle - 3595
Collingwood - 2995
Grey - 2439
Hatfield - 1976 (What on earth were they thinking!? lol)
Hill Bede - 1499
Trevs - 1042
...... http://www.dur.ac.uk/admissions/statistics/sheets/0331.pdf

Sadly it doesnt tell you the number of offers made to those applicants.
Damn at Kingsgate being closed, ah well good job i'm living out this year

Also, Grey was the most attractive Hill college i thought when originally looking at the prospectus!
