To be honest, I'd worry about applying first, and then worry about accommodation *after* you get in. From what I can gather, college rooms vary significantly in size and quality. I'm sure, if your application was successful, and you had specific requirements (for example an en suite due to medical/religious issues), the college would do their best to accommodate you.
Rooms vary so enormously within a college, and even more so between colleges that you can only really get a decent idea if someone from Newnham replies.

Trinity's vary from "Furnished apartment with onsuite, your own kitchen and living room" to "small dark cube". Just depends where you are on the room ballot, how luck you are, if you got a 1st and if you're postgrad.

Nonsense. To apply you have to choose a college (well, generally) and it makes far more sense to choose a college based on accommodation than academic ability or what fellows they have or whatnot, considering most teaching is centralised and varies fairly little.

accomodation is generally "very good" compared to most other universities

looks like she's chosen her college already, though, which was the point. there are no guarantees for certain types of accommodation, even within the college, from what i can gather, therefore i'd worry about getting in first.

The rooms I've seen at Newnham vary, but they're all of good quality. I really wouldn't worry about ensuite. Many ensuite rooms are quite small to fit the bathroom in. The rooms vary considerably within colleges and between colleges, so it's quite difficult to say what you should expect. Usually rooms improve as you progress.

In terms of anecdotal evidence, I'm at Sidney and can say that most 1st year rooms are average (some better/worse), most 2nd year rooms are average/slightly below average (depending on whether you're living out) and most 3rd year rooms are very good.

it is true that accommodation can vary really widely within colleges anyway, though, so even if a college has amazing rooms that you love you might not get them anyway depending on where you end up in the ballot - so it might be a bit silly to make a decision based on accommodation.

Naturally what you'll be in varies, so you take a view of it all. On Clare open days they never take you up to the Colony, so I took myself etc. I'm a pessimist so I tried judging by the worst case accommodation! I maintain that judging by accommodation is a worthwhile task, as long as you're not too naive about it .
