the injection (depo) and weight gain

ok so i had my implanon implant removed yesterday (oowww my poor arm) but i also had my first depo provera (sp) injection. i was warned about the issue of weight gain cos it increases you appititie and also that it makes it harder to lose weight. i basically wanted to know if anyone was in the same situation and whether you had any suggestions of ways to avoid the food cravings (thus not pileing on the pounds).
I'd already started drinking water and/or fruit juice when i felt tempted to snack, and i've taken up cycling to help get into shape. just wondered if there was anything else i could do? thanx

Just be mindful of everytime you get the urge to snack. Think 'When did I last eat?' and 'What have I eaten today?', then pick a snack that is appropriate (a banana, or perhaps a small chocolate bar if you've been good or just wait til your next meal and tell your tummy off )

My ex-girlfriend was on depo for about a year and it messed up her body up. Even when she finished, she didn't start her periods properly for another year afterwards and only spotted at completley random times until them, she had to make sure she kept towels with her at all times because it was that unpredictable. Can I ask why it is you got the chip removed? I've heard quite highly of it from my friends who've been on it.

Can you see and feel the implant when you have it?

Ive considered getting the injection, But not sure. Ive read all the info on it in that thread.. Supose the idea of completely stopping periods is a bit weird.

Was it painful? (I hate injections.)

I've used depot for over 12 years and didn't put on any weight. Nor did anyone else I know...

My implanon played up a lot  out of 5 times that i was on for a month (and had to go on the pill...which defeated the object of my being on the implant) twice i ended up anaemic. and always felt drained. Plus the double dosage of hormones all the time started to get me down and made me very cranky. It just wasn't the trouble free contraception i'd imagined it to be and it got a bit to much for me. And i've had the implant nearly 2 years, the doctor agreed it should have settled sown and it was probably that i just wasn't suited to it, but that i was probably less likely to have a similar problem on depo. So yeah...just my luck :frown: But i'd advise it for others. The times it didn't play up it made for a good choice of contraception

I'm currently using the Depo jab. I've been using it for well over a year and I've only just stopped getting bleeding everyday. I have put a little bit of weight on but I think that may be more to do with the fact that I had glandular fever for 6 months and couldn't do any exercise. The reason for weight gain whilst on the depo is t your appetite is increased so the best way to avoid it is by filling up on fruit instead of crisps etc.

I was on depo for many years and loved it, PARTICULARLY the part about not getting any periods! Why are people here worried about that? Anyway, I never had trouble with weight gain, in fact I never had any bad side effects until I had been on it for 5 years, but they say you should take a break every 3-5 years so when I did start having problems I suppose my time was up anyway. I couldn't recommend it more highly, it's great. Also, you should ask the nurse about getting the jab in your bum instead of your arm, I was skeptical at first about taking my clothes off voluntarily, but you don't feel the injection at all and have no discomfort in the hours that follow. One nurse also said it was better in the bum for some medical reason which I have long since forgotten. I went on the IUS about six months ago and have put on 10kg (but I don't blame the coil so much as the fact that I eat like a pig)!! So speaking as someone who apparently can easily put on weight from contraception, depo was great! Good luck!

My friend had the injection and she has gone from a size 10 to a size 16/18 over 3/4 years. You have to be very careful because in some people, it can mess the body up.

I've had no problems with the injection, and I haven't put on any weight since I've been having it.
