Bring grape jelly as well if you like your PBJ sandwiches. Peanut butter isn't bad here, just not as sweet

maple syrup and stuf to make hotcakes. i don't think we sell those much.
Reply 62
You can get proper and authentic maple syrup here easily enough!

okay, if you have any more questions about anything at all, feel free to ask!
(btw, do you know the name of your college sister? just so that i know whether i've met my little college sis on here!)

I still haven't received my final information pack (it's supposed to be arriving any day) but I do know that I will be living in Garden Hall. I'll post when I know more.

the rooms in garden have huge windows that span one entire length of the room. with a bit of luck, you'll have one of the corner rooms which are bigger than the others and have even more windows! the kitchens aren't very well equipped in garden, so you'll probably end up using the kitchen on the ground floor in wolfson building!

All this talk about the colleges allowing students to store things between terms has me a bit confused. Exactly how long are we allowed to live in the rooms allocated at the beginning of term? I was under the impression that I would be able to live in mine from (at least) start of Michaelmas to the end of Trinity - even between terms. Am I mistaken?

There is no general rule for Oxford. Each college makes its own arrangements. During the vacations they like to make extra money by letting out rooms in college for conferences. However, some colleges reserve some blocks of accommodation which can be rented from October to end of June and sometimes during the summer by special arrangement. This is a very common problem. Very often the accommodation which can be rented all year is in less attractive blocks and not in the main building. Some colleges may allow you to rent a different room for the vacation period. As I said every college has its own adminstration arrangements and the only way to find out is by contacting the college directly and asking them.

With regards to the PC/Mac thing check with your college, as some college networks do not support Mac computers.

I haven't asked about a printer...is that something lots of students bring or are there IT rooms where we can print documents, etc.?
Reply 70
you don't really need to bring a printer, there is one in the college computer room and one in the library. and you can e-mail most essays, so you don't have to print out stuff very often!

My information package finally arrived today even though it was mailed on Aug. 19. A portion of the address was missing and it took a month for the US Postal Service to find me. (Lots of stuff for me to sign and return and I hope Oxford doesn't think this is my "normal course of business". I'll probably arrive to find demerits already on my record. :frown: )

My college sister is Nat. Would that be you? I do thank you for all the help you've been (and everyone else too!) and I now think that I have most everything sorted out. I may be posting this weekend with some last minute questions as I leave for Oxford on Sept. 29.

I’m glad to hear a printer won’t be needed- here we had to do many Power Point presentations with handouts. I’m also glad to hear that essays can be emailed.

Many thanks.

Thanks Anchemis-great information. It seems to cover it all. If I don't show up with the right stuff, then I wasn't paying attention to your list!

There is a fresher's party? Where can I find information on this? I would definitely go!

How was the party last week in New York-did you attend?
Reply 74
i'm glad i've been of help to you! i'm not your college sis though, mine didn't make her offer so i'm sisterless. nat is great fun, and definitely a really great college sis!
and don't worry, it won't really matter if you return stuff late, esp. if you tell them that the address was incomplete... college tends to ignore the needs of international students, e.g. they send out invoices during the vacations which have to be paid within two weeks- not really feasable if you live abroad  don't worry!
looking forward to seeing you soon at ox!

Quick question...do they supply hangers in the wardrobe or should we bring them? Cold there yet? Thanks!
Reply 76
some hangers are provided by college, but you can buy cheap ones at the pound store/at tesco's, so you don't have to bring them with you!
Reply 77
Is it cold here yet?
We had beautiful weather until about 10 days ago when it went from summer to winter over night - meep!!
It's mild-ed up a bit now so as long as you're in long sleeves or have a thin sweater you're fine... but it's gettin chilly folks!
Reply 78
OK on the hangers, then. OK on long sleeves. It's only 28C today so it's cooled a bit here too. Please, would there ever be a need for a long (floor length) ball gown? I am bringing a few semi-formal things but wondered about the gown. Thanks!
Reply 79
i don't think that there will be any ball-like events during michaelmas for which you would need a ball gown. the ball season starts in trinity term, so you can still bring your ball gown after the christmas/easter holidays.
