The workload is probably the most intense of any university course.

Hours per day varies massively depending on the stage in your design project and the year of study. As you move further up the school the workload gets heavier.

Don't let this put you off though, if you're passionate about architecture you'll enjoy it. First year's not that bad anyway. It's tough, but manageable.

Do you feel as though you dont get as much free time as you would hope. Does the first year count for zero percent so it don't count anyway, what d you need to be let through to the second year.

Nah, I knew I wouldn't be getting masses of free time so I'm alright with it. I'm the kind of person who's happy to sit and work for hours if it's something I enjoy. I don't mind working long hours; it's the stress and the constant pressure, and the unrealistic expectations, which can be difficult at times.

If you're the sort of person who loves going out partying every night of the week and spending lots of time socialising, be prepared to make sacrifices in order not to fall behind very quickly.

First year doesn't go towards your final degree. You just need to pass everything in order to progress to second year.

I would say - first year average 40 hours a week
second year 60 hours a week average, increasing to 80 hours a week pre crit
third year 60-70 pretty much consistently, rising to 90 hours+ a week before the final show

fifth year - pretty much 70 hours solid throughout the year a week, rising to 90-100+ at the mo.

free time = the supermarket for food, sleeping in fifth year. there is a lot of stress and you become fairly socially inadequate from doing the course, so you need to be down with that before getting involved.

:nah:
Architecture (the degree) is slowly sucking out my passion and love for Architecture (the subject).

But despite this, I wouldn't want to do any other degree instead.

Go for it if you have a passion, but your life will be easier if you have a masochistic streak.

In terms of work load, it's ridiculous. My brain feels like it has been taken out of my head, rinsed like a sponge and dipped into bleach. And that's only at the end of second year.

3rd year was absolutely ridiculous, i had no life for that whole year :frown: & i lost my passion for it completely and don't want to be an architect at all anymore.

I'm (very) scared of third year.

I've told myself over the last two years "ah don't worry too much/don't kill yourself because it's not third year".

...although now I'll probably just tell myself "it's fine, at least it's not 5th year"

Hey, just finishing an architectural technology degree myself, done three years, will be starting Architecture in Westminster this September I can understand the pressure and the amount of work and unrealistic expectations and I know its going to be tougher.

For you guys doing architecture, what actually takes up most of your time?
Is it learning the software? Autocad, photoshop etc..
Is it practical work?
Is there much theory, essay writing etc..?
Or anything else that takes up alot of time?

I do the work, but this year has made me filled with self-doubt about my abilities which hasn't been the best for my progress/motivation and I will no doubt have some kind of break down next year. :woo:

(Optimist, me.)

Jealous about you finishing, I've still got a flipping learning journal to do among other things.

Im hoping 3rd year will be better though, because at least i know its the end, im not carrying on with it.

I think i need to fix my diet, so im not knackered all the time.

It's absolutly terrible one of the girls I live with has just finished her first year. She used to be in uni 8-5 come home get dinner and then have aquick shower and be back in uni by 7 and stay there untill 3 and do the whole thing all over again. And she rarely went out and on her one day off she slept most of it and then went into uni that afternoon anyway.

Yeah I guess that'll make it easier... I want to do Part 2, god help me.

Sleep! My latest bed time is 11pm these days, first time I've managed to go to sleep before midnight for almost a decade probably. Nothing like architecture sucking all your energy out of you

Well, I only have to design it first. How much detail did Kevin say we should go into? ... I'd kinda like some sleep tonight!

I'll photoshop details and sections tomorrow as they're not so urgent.

Not a lot, just draw some kind of vague-cube shaped building in the right spot. (axo)
Don't worry about details and sections, I haven't done that either.. We've mostly finished the models, and just wanna print out the three bits together on one image tomorrow to show him what we'll do for the final thing.
