As Google is evidently so hard....

I don't see why what you've got in the hole would matter, just keep it clean..

I got mine done a few months ago and I didn't have any choice - it had to be a ring! It only really hurts for a second, just deep breaths, distract yourself etc.
I love it though! and yes, keep it clean....
good luck

Generally you can get it pierced with either a ring or a barbell first, if you want a butterfly stud, then you'll have to wait until it's healed. If you go to a piercer that tries to use a gun, walk away and don't look back. You need to find a good, sterile place that only pierces using needles and titanium jewellery. It won't hurt much, just exhale as they insert the needle and it takes the edge off.
In terms of aftercare, the general advice is to soak it in saline solution every day, then slowly cut down the amount of times you do it (Go from 2-1 times per day, to every other day, 3 times a week, twice a week, once a week then once every month or so.)

Good luck!

Posts like this make me lol. I got my helix done twice by a gun for £5 altogether (£3 for one, £5 for a pair), and I had a butterfly stud and everything. I always wonder how much damage I did to myself. Ah well, they're still going strong and I don't have any problems with them and that was 2 years ago.

I would recommend a straight barbell or labret stud for the initial healing. BCR's put a lot of pressure on fresh piercings and therefore you're more likely to get granulomas popping up.

i had the option of hoop or stud but went for the hoop. some places give you a choice of hoop thickness too. unfortunately for me, when i had it done the first time (ive got 2) they just gave me the thick one so i had to have a thick one the second time too

You get a choice of a ring or a bar.

Am gonna be getting my helix pierced, do you have to have a stud when you get it done or can you get a hoop because people are trying to tell me when you get any part of your ears pierced it has to be a stud

My helix and tragus piercings were both done with a labret and my lobes all done with normal studs. I'm pretty sure I had a choice with the helix (not 100% sure), but I'd say a labret is probably easier in terms of aftercare - rings can easily get caught in hair etc.

Stud I’ve had my helix done and they will give you a stud to start with until it heals it takes longer than a lobe piercing to heal, just because the hoop would put too much pressure on the new piercing

It's the top of the ear
