Hi,
So theres us 6 lads moving into a house next year, there is 2 rooms at the top and 3 in the middle with 1 room downstairs.
Noone wants the room down stairs, whats the best/fairest way to decide?
Opinions?
Thanks

Make it cheaper. But a few pounds on the other rooms and a few pounds of that room. Someone will bite.

Between blokes tends to be much easier than it is with girls. If everyone says they don't want it then try making it cheaper and seeing if anyone wants it then. If that doesn't work out, number all the rooms and put the names in a hat. Then let everyone choose and that's their room. Unless there's a really good reason for one of you not to have that room, it should be done as fairly as possible.

Draw straws, its the easiest way. Or, plan some insane/fun/not necessarily alcohol related challenge which will decide the outcome. Could be more fun that way, no?

Poker.

Yeah, draw straws. And no matter who gets the **** room, make sure it's cheaper than all the others. Only fair.

fight to the death... or names out of a hat you choose

These have all kind of been talked about, including fight to the death.
I think everyone likes the idea of a challange, but then again there is the problem of all of us being evenly matched somewhat and agreeing on the challange.
Some will win fitness, others games, others alcohol.

Its all a bit of a pain.

Just bid on it. Start off at 0% of the rent and bid up. Eventually someone will say they want it for somewhere between 0% and 16.7% and no one will want to pay more for it. One room done, continue with each remaining room and percentage of the remaining rent. Easy.

Heads or tales?

A variant of shotgun?

Okay fine, drastic measures. A bag of kittens for each person and a baseball bat, whoever takes the longest to make the squeaks stop gets the basement room.

A challenge will never be perfectly balanced. Just use something that's perfectly random: give everyone a number and throw a six-sided die. It's perfect that there's six of you.

Pick numbers 1 to 6 out a hat then select rooms in that order then half way through the year you get to change rooms and pick from 6 to 1.

We've got this problem tomorrow aswell.

How is it crap just because it's downstairs?

Reply 16

Compete in a roshambo tournament. Two of you each take turns of kicking the other in the balls until one submits.

Less sociable, upstairs for the bathroom, most prone to robbery (we live 10 metres from a pub), next to front room, loudest traffic hearing, answers the door all the time.

At the moment were thinking, a challange "six-athlon" as in we all pick one challange each, and it works on a point system. 6 for a win, 5 for second etc. person with lowest points, sucks. Also we all pay 1 pound more, so they save £5 a week. (5 paying £68.50, 1 paying £62.50) sound fair?

That doesn't sound fair imo! This challenge thing your going to do is just going to cause problems. The other 5 should pay £4 more a week and the one should be reduced by £20. And it should be done randomly!

We had this problem too.

We just put our names in a hat and just chose rooms that way.

So much easier and fair.
