 who's a mathematician here?

For my free elective next year im looking to do one out of the department - and i want to do Bayesian Methods III?

is that allowed for first years? and what kind of things are included? (stats lol....der but what kind of stats?)

:tsr:

woah, you're keen, why not just try Single Maths A? It's not that bad (despite the fact I only got 40% in my exam :-S )

Erm, no Bayesian Methods III is a third year module (hence the III), it requires Statistical Concepts II a second year module. You still need to pass your elective and it is highly unlikely you could pass a third year module in your first year even if it was allowed, which it isn't.

lol sorry - i did see the III but thought oh. lol. anyway. i checked the single maths A and its 40 credits isn't it? its got red clashes with my economics modules :frown:

dunno, it's a single module. If you take single maths B, you get the legend that is Dr. Peter Bowcock teaching you, which is a massive bonus. (hint: I got 60% on SMB, which is supposed to be harder than SMA).

Reply 5

well it says Core Mathematics A : 40 credits

Reply 6

and its clashing :'(

Reply 7

Well I wouldn't worry too much for 2 reasons:
SMA is boring, like all maths that isn't taught by Dr. Bowcock (although SMA's very own Dr. Bolton is pretty cool).
The timetable will probably change.
If you desperately want to take it, the person to talk to is a certain Dr. Sharry Borgan, as far as I can remember.

Excuse me, but whats a free elective? Is it exclusive to mathematicians? Sorry, just thought I would check.

It's a module that you're allowed to take outside of your department depending upon timetable clashes etc. I don't think it's exclusive to mathematicians, I can take 1/2 outside of the geography dept. this year if I so wish.

(Unless I utterly cocked up my understanding of it)

So. Discrete maths: who did it in the first year? what do you cover? is it hard? lol sorry for all the questions.....did a *bit* of discrete maths for A level and its an interesting option! and it doesn't clash with my other modules!

any info appreciated!
