I have been told today that we can find out, through UCAS, if we have got a university place or not, from 7am on results day.

If you had an offer of AAB, and managed to attain ABB, for example, and they wanted to take you anyway, would it appear as successful on UCAS, or would it decline you, as the university want you to ring up first for them to accept you on ABB? Anyone know about this?

It's likely that the 'decision' that early in the morning will be automated, based just on grades. If you wanted to see if they would still accept you, you'd have to contact them and, if they did accept you, they would manually change it.

My friend first thought he was rejected from his firm, but later phoned them and got onto the course.

Yes, UCAS track closes down a couple of days before results day and reopens at about 6/7am although obviously everyone else has the same idea as you so it tends to crash etc so you might not find out via track.

The answer to your question would be that it would depend - the universities get your results in advance so know who has met their offers and can begin to make decisions about people who did not... they might decide okay, you've missed your offer but we'll let you in anyway so it will show up on track as unconditional firm. They might decide certainly not, no and then it would come up on track as unsuccessful at this choice. Or, it might still be listed as conditional firm if they haven't yet made a decision so then you'd need to call them once you got your results to see what they had to say/plead your case.

The issue you need to decide is that if you miss your offer you then have to wait several hours to find out what grades you actually got so you can phone your choices then realistically consider clearing. Before that point, you'd have several hours of not knowing which is fine if you know you've been accepted, but if you're in limbo I imagine its a very painful experience particularly if your friends know by 7:15am that they've been accepted.

Results Day and UCAS Track on Results Day might be of interest
