I have a matrix

\left[ \begin{array}{cccc} 1 & 0 & 4 & -0.5 \\ 0 & 1 & -2 & 0.5 \end{array} \right]

from which it states "we can read the equations z=4x-2y, w=-0.5x+0.5y for vectors (x,y,z,w)".

i can see that there is a 4, -2, -0.5 etc in the matrix, but i see it as x+4z=0.5w and y+0.5w=2z. how have they done it in their order?

Just by looking at it. The columns give the vectors (x,y,z,w) whilst row 1 gives x and row 2 gives y.
