Is Laura Spence still at Harvard or what?

P.S. You can find her interview experience on the Oxford and Cambridge admissions database: http://www.oxbridge-admissions.org.uk/profiles/show.php?id=276 It's kind of surreal :p:

i was surprised someone so evidently suitable & dedicated to medicine didn't take up one of her medicine offers in this country - rather disappeared off to harvard to read biochem, a subject the tutors went on record as saying she 'most probably would have got into oxford for'.

prestige hunter? of course not..

Yes, that did occur to me. I think the whole fuss about her rejection was ridiculous anyway - other people with grades equal or better to hers will have been rejected, but did they complain to the media??

well the theory was it was because she was 'female, state schooled & from the north.'

don't think it was divulged at the time, but given the candidates who were ranked in the top 5 (thus got offers) included - females, state schoolers, northerners, & ethnic minorities.. i think it might have been more due to the fact she wasn't even top 10 ranked & there were only 5 places.

but, what do i know.. :p:

i suppose the media likes a good few sensationalist stories each year. this one ticked the reasonably photogenic female box, the clutches of A grades (handy link to are they getting easier?), big bad oxbridge snobs, social class/geographic discrimination & medicine (link to NHS/Dr shortage rants) - so twas an all round winner really. though she probably was a tad exploited by the powers that be..

Why was she not ranked in the top 10? Were there lots of people with more than 10A*s or was it a bad OMAT/interview? You seem to know a lot about this.
Reply 68
The story going round at Oxford is that she interviewed pretty poorly.
Reply 69
i think interview mostly as H&E said.

obviously, pre BMAT days as you know, so i think the system was one of ranking everyone called for interview:

verbal part of OMAT & numerical part of OMAT = both fairly objective
interview 1 & interview 2 = completely independent, often seperate days, separate panels etc. & separate assessment objectives

quite a bit of scope to fluff one part.. then the 4 were combined & the top X people given offers & perhaps the next X pooled.. she was outside of both. not sure GCSEs etc came into it (maybe another rank?) - more aptitude test & assessment of potential in interview.

but if you asked me to guess i imagine there were certainly more than 6 applicants with 10A*s, put it that way!

Lol, so? The first female Prime Minister of India (Indira Gandhi) studied at Somerville, Oxford.

so? Jawaharlal Nehru, the first PM of india AND Rajiv Gandhi studied at Trinity, cambridge:wink:

The current Indian PM, Manmohan Singh was at St. John's Cambridge too...

Lol, thats excellent.

I'm sorry, but I wouldn't even have allowed my name in the paper if I was rejected from Oxbridge - it's depressing enough.
I think I would be the perfect person to exploit though - ethnic minority (only 8% at Ox), 9A* (one A in PE) at GCSE, As at AS, state school (technically)....applying for a less popular degree than medicine (because half of the medics who are rejected is due to the number of places they have), and applying for the same college she applied for.
Bring on the Ilford Recorder(!)

She's a girl who applied to Magdalen, Oxford to read Medicine some years back now. She was rejected. Her headteacher kicked up a fuss, which led to a media frenzy. The problem was that she was a state school girl from the North, which the media took to mean there must have been discrimination or she would have got in.

<Sarcasm>This one perhaps explains why she didnt get an offer?</Sarcasm>

''How did you find the tutors in the college?
We were given maps saying where they were so it was easy to find them.''
