RICE (rest, ice, compression and elevation)

Failing that RICE-M (the above plus medication)

Keep off it for 3 or so weeks...

Also, see your local physician if you;re worried...

Also known as jumper's knee. It's pain right underneath the knee cap and I get it everytime I play basketball. Jumping and landing hard on a solid surface. I'm wearing a strap, but it doesn't seem to be working. Anyone else had this problem, and if so what did you use to fix it?
Thanks.

This is a difficult problem to shift. There's nothing particularly 'wrong' but the more exercise you do the worse it gets. The best advice is to try to rest it a bit - RICE has already been mentioned. Also I'd reconsider that strap. In my experience strapping up joints works in the short term (i.e. allows you to play when you couldn't otherwise) but shouldn't be used in the long-term. The joint in question needs to be stressed to increase or maintain its strength, if you're using supports all the time then the joint will not strengthen. I would recommend resting things for a couple of weeks (if you can) and then slowly easing your way back into things without the support.

I can only agree with what has been suggested. Pain is the body's way of telling you to watch out. So don't do the things that hurt. It is also important to restart sports slowly and to take seriously any new pains that might start up again.

yeah i had this problem.. it persisted and lead to a dislocation of the patella and me ripping my tendons and ligaments, i had to have an operation to remove my kneecap and insert a flase titanium one, just becasue i didn't follow the doctors advice, if i were you i would seek medical attention and follow the doctors orders, i wouldn't want to see anyone go through the 11 months of pain i went through!!!
