Im a little confused about how to choose my modules for my first year n wondered if any current students can lend me a hand! Im right in thinking we do 3 subjects for the 3rd yeah right? Well when i make my module choices do i put modules for all 3 subjects or just my main subject? Hope someone can help! Cheers

Im not quite sure what you mean but here we go. At all Scottish universities when you apply through UCAS you are only really applying to the faculty and you finalise your subjects and modules when you get there, therefore you can apply to any one course in the faculty you want to apply to and choose your subjects and modules when you start. finaly the modules avaible to in you in each course differ each year, so you choice of modules is made at the begining of each year for each subject, though you do fewer modules in your minor subjects.

OK. The year is divided into 2 semesters.

You must do 120 credits in the whole year. That is 60 credits per semester.

Most modules are worth 20 credits. Therefore you normally do 6 modules per year. That is 3 modules per semester.

So in first year what you will be doing is 3 different subjects. For example, I am doing Computer Science, Management and Economics. There is one module for each subject available in semester 1, and one module for each available in semester 2.

You will find that in first year at least, you are doing more modules in subjects other than that you applied to the university with. Eg I applied to do computer science, yet am only doing 2 comp science modules in first year, and 4 other modules.

Some subjects have more than one module available for each semester, in which case just take whatever you can. You can take whatever modules you like as long as you equal 120 credits alltogether. It is advised to take modules from within the same faculty (ie science faculty, divinity faculty etc), you may take 40 credits worth from another faculty however.

Take a look at the various modules available here: http://electron.st-andrews.ac.uk/catalogue/simple.htm

When you are ready to choose what modules you want, log into the website with your username and password (details on how to set up your password are included in the entrants pack) and choose them. To do that go here: https://portal.st-andrews.ac.uk/Advising/
You see, I'm very keen on going to St. Andrews - open day 5th October :p: - to do Spanish. I was aware of the fact that i wouldn't be doing Spanish alone, like in all Scottish Unis. But would i have to take all my modules/ subjects from the faculty of Modern Languages?

Because at the moment i'm thinking maybe Politics, Ancient History, Philosophy??

There is a School of Modern Languagues which is within the Faculty of Arts. All of the other subjects you suggest are also within the Faculty of Arts so as long as there are no timetable problems or over-subscription you should be fine.

St Andrews has four faculties: Arts, Divinity, Science and Medicine (the latter is more a School than a true faculty  ).
