Formals at St Andrews

Hi! My friend is going to St Andrews this September and she was just wondering what the formals (e.g balls) are like, and what you should wear for them. If you have to wear a ball gown, is it possible to buy one in St Andrews? Any info would really be appreciated. Thanks. :smile:

Hey there!

There are 3 main formal balls - The opening ball, your halls ball, and the christmas ball.

There are also various voluntary formal occasions, eg society run occasions, department run events, etc

People just wear dinner suits to them, the Scottish with their kilts, other people in their standard tuxedo style suits, the girls in formal dresses.

Instead of having to buy a ball gown, you can hire one in shops in South Street and Market Street.
