The Student Room Group

Hi there,

I'm sorry I can't be of much help, but I did see this thread went without reply for a few hours so I thought I might chip in.

This is very anecdotal, but from what I've heard, all accommodation at Oxford is rather good, especially for Graduate students.

There aren't very many graduate students on TSR from Oxford and I'm afraid that until someone comes along and gives you a better reply this is all I can help you with.

Personally, I would just see how far your budget can stretch and then go for the top grade of accomms you can realistically and comfortably afford.

I suggest you join the facebook group http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=250372427395 and ask people there. Also look for the matriculation 2009 group because there's information on that too.

St Ant's accommodation varies quite a bit, even within each band, as far as I know.

Thanks everyone! I just thought of the accommodation question as it is one of the most recurring question amongst folks who are going to St Antony's.

Where's the rest of the St Antony's peeps?? Hrm...

Varies hugely between Colleges. In general if you go to non-graduate only College, undergrads will have much better accommodation as this is then rented out for conferences during the holidays.

That's not strictly true. In grad + undergrad colleges, undergrads are often not allowed kitchens whilst grads are. So grad accommodation is often better. Also, many mixed colleges keep the undergrads on-site, which often means in older buildings. Yes prettier but modern buildings are more likely to have en-suite facilities etc.

As I said, St Ant's rooms varies. Even within the Founders Building, the room size varies hugely.

The important bit in my post was the variation - Rai's post (the one I was responding to, as I clearly cannot comment on St Ant's), said 'but from what I've heard, all accommodation at Oxford is rather good, especially for Graduate students.'

...I feel that is a fairly untrue, very sweeping generalisation, particularly if comparing to other universities. I have heard a lot of grads who have the choice say that they much prefer to not live in College accommodation due to being able to get somewhere much nicer for less money (and in some cases, actually be closer to their College). A lot of people lurk on here without posting, and may have taken Rai's statement as true.

Here here, I'm only relaying what I've heard, don't shoot the messenger.

 I'm not trying to...just explaining to Little Jules who I'd been replying to and why...nothing personal.

Without wanting to put anyone off, I'd agree that not all grad accommodation is good. I live in a private house this year

yep, quality of accommodation entirely depends on the college..usually the wealthier the college, the better the facilities, and vice versa..

I was just made an offer from St. Antony's, anyone can tell me about the college?

I found this picture map on the website:

Perhaps someone could stick it at the top of the thread.

Thanks, I put it in the wiki too.

Any word from recent admittees or current students? Perhaps Antonians are too sensible to spend time on TSR?

Hey all - I was made an offer from St Antony's for the MPhil Political Theory. Can anyone advise on differences between accommodation levels - and any recommendations for which building in the college to specify (I know you can put down a preference for a particular building).
Thanks in advance!

Anyone enrolling in St Antony’s 2020-2021? My course is MSc in Economics for Development.
