Can somebody give me a brief explaination about the type of things you cover in computer science at degree level?

Computer science is software based these days. You will probably be studying Java and C++ in great lengths, X86 assembly langauge, processor design, probably a bit of web development (ASP/PHP etc), Databases, maths etc.

I think they aim to teach you a lot of the logic required for the more advanced programming rather than just syntax.

All courses are different though.

Like amazingtrade said - all course are different. If you go to one of the more 'traditional' unis (such as oxbridge) then the course tends to have a lot more mathamatical content, where as at the newer unis its a lot more vocational.
