Broken Headlights

Hey

Someone noticed today after work that my lefthand headlight wasnt working.

I had a look and the main beam and sidelights on the left hand side do not work. Since it isnt just the main beam I thought it couldnt be a buld so I tested everything else, the full beam and indicator works it is just the main beam and sidelights.

What is this likely to be? I thought it was just a bulb but the sidelight doesnt work either?

What happens if I am stopped with one broken light?

Cheers

Full beam IS dipped beam. Which one isn't working, dipped or main? It could well be two bulbs that went at different times within a week or so and you just didn't notice. They're on totally different circuits so it's more likely that it's bulbs. Buy a couple of new bulbs and try it out. They're cheap and it's a good idea to keep spares anyway. If it's not that then you need to buy/borrow a multimeter and get digging to see where the problem is. If it's not the bulbs it's probably a bad earth seeing as the other side is working fine which rules out a switching or feed problem.

Sorry for not being clear. Dipped beam and sidelights do not work but the main beam does work. I will go to the garage and get some bulbs

Nooo not the garage. They'll try to convince you to pay them to do it when you really needn't. Go to a motor factors (or if you REALLY must, Halfrauds) and they'll be able to give you advice about which bulbs you need for your car and how to fit them

I dont mean garage like to get it fixed I just mean theres a little petrol station near me that sells bulbs, fuses oil and stuff and I know the guy who runs it so if I take him the bulbs he will tell me the new ones and I can fit them myself
Pop the bulbs out and inspect the filaments, if there is any blackening to the glass or the filament is obviously damaged then we have found the culprit. Try swapping the bulbs from the working side over to see if they work before spending money on new ones. When refitting, make sure the connectors are well fitted and try them again. Then consult your manual to see which fuse relates to your headlights. It is possible that there is a different fuse for each side, but unlikely, but it's worth a check. After all that, if you haven't found the problem it's time to start inspecting the wiring to see if it has been damaged anywhere.

Note of caution : Don't touch the glass of halogen bulbs, and if you do then clean them with alcohol wipes. They run at extreme temperatures and the grease from your fingers can cause them to shatter.
