How social is Arthur Vick???

I have heard lots about Arthur Vick (sadly after I had already applied) and it has all been that it is very quite and unsocial. I have applied for it because I liked the rooms but I am very social and will want to live with other social people. Can anyone who is at Warwick tell me whether I should try to get moved if I do get it??? Has anyone joining this year applied for it??

Any thoughts would be great...

Thanks

Claire

You haven't been allocated a room yet, i wouldn't worry  - yet :P

I've applied for it first choice, and i wouldn't describe myself as boring, nor would my mates.

Remember, your social life is what you make of it; if you can't stray beyond AV for your social life that would be quite sad anyhow!

I wouldn't worry, they'll suss you from your personal statement thing and place you accordingly.

You also have to remember, that most of us, simply won't be able to afford going out 7 days a week and will be juggling uni/work work + hobbies + sleeping and the rest.

Your bound to find some "party makers" and "party breakers"; get to know the right people (you know what i mean) and let the good times roll in.

ah you put it so nicely  I haven't even been allocated the place yet but i'm really not sure about it. Hopefully they will understand from the person statement thing that i'm not a boring "kinda gal" if not, i could find myself not spending much time in my building at all!!

Oh well, I guess i'll find out soon enough.

what work are you bored at?

lol......i cant wait until you get there and actually see it!

your maingroup of friends initially WILL be your hallmates, and believe me, they are all extremely quiet and not very sociable.

you do get the odd exception, but I promise you if you like to go out 3/4 times a week you'll find it difficult to find people to do that with, especially after the first couple of weeks.

up to you if you don't want to believe me, but Ive been at warwick for 2 years, and have friends that lived in AV (that moved after a week may I add!).

up to you if you want to take the risk, and ignore someone who has more experience of what it is like.

yes the rooms are awesome, but I guarantee you that if you live any sort of social existence that doesnt involve playing chess and talking about computer games you will be sorely disappointed!!!!

NHS direct, rubbish part time job to clear the chunk of debt I acquired from too much going out!

just secured my job after uni so its happy days!

where in essex are you from?

It is as social as you make it. Besides even if your hallmates are boring it isn't as if you aren't permitted to go to other accomodations or leave AV.

I was in AV last year...
Lets say out of a corridor of 26 people (2 kitchens) i had what I would call one good friend which by my standards is pathetic.
Out of my kitchen on 13 people, only one other person would go out to the union but we had diff tastes in music and i didnt really get on with her.. noone drank apart from like maybe one person having a beer when they were watching the football and it was soo frustrating...

its like, everyone generally in their first year and def for the first term sticks to hallmates. it can be very difficult to break out so you've got to make a conscious effort. something which i admit was my fault that i didnt do in the first term.

My advice if you get AV is to make the effort to go out, meet people, go on society socials etc. dont limit yourself and dont ever just sit and be happy with friends you know arent really your kind of people.

Thats true but I'm sure there will be nights where i can't afford to go out and if i'm going to stay in, i'd rather do it in a social environment where i can have just as much fun on no money as I would going out. are you there already or starting in 3 weeks??

Lol, by leaving I meant going out. Theirs no need to transfer if you think it will be unsociable. I transferred to Heronbank which is easily the best accomodation on campus. To be honest if your friendly, and get along with people easily you should be able to have a good time no matter where you go.

Oh, and another thing... if u can, move from AV as soon as possible before you get too attached to the lovely rooms with ensuites and kitchens with lounges that have sofas.... its such nice accom shame the people were kinda dull!

I wouldn't ask to change just yet - wait until you're there and see how it is. I was in Rootes and my corridor were all pretty quiet - I didn't get on with them at all but I made friends elsewhere instead.
If you get there and everyone is really boring, then you can apply to change accommodation but not instantly (the process opens something like 3 weeks into term - I don't remember exactly). Being in Arthur Vick you probably stand a better-than-average chance of getting a move (I applied to move from Rootes and didn't get to :frown:) but I'd keep an open mind about it - your corridor might surprise you! And there are exceptions to every rule anyway (like my corridor in Rootes!) - you might be on a party corridor even in Arthur Vick

That answer was in response to someone else but I forgot to reply to the specific comment sorry. So you transferred then?? did you wait until yuo got there or did you send an email?? I am almost certain that I will transfer now. I would rather have a good social in my building than to have to go in search of one. :frown:

I hope Im not included in that group, but I do remember that your hall was dead. You can't generalise though mangomaz.

So many people live in AV1, 2, and 3. Its not as if everyone there is dull, and I didn't transfer because Arthur Vick was boring. I transferred in term 2 which is pretty late. Honestly it would be regretful to transfer as soon as you get there, I see no reason why you cannot have fun in Arthur Vick.

im from west london..... do you ever go to time and envy? I was at faces in gants hill last weekend as well, I have to say I love essex!

well I lived i westwood last year, wasn't too happy about it cos it was my 4th choice but I ended up having a wicked time because i met a big group of lads that were exactly like me. Playing football for the uni helps as well cos you end up making loads of mates that are really similar to you, so I would say try and join a sports club/society.

I would reccomend rootes as the best hall socially to be honest, the rooms arent great but not as bad as some of the best ones in other unis. plus wouldnt you rather have a room that is not as nice but a life as well?!?!

I think I am going to see how it goes when i get there. never know, I might be able to shake AV up a bit  Can always move if I need to later.

I play hockey so i'll be joining the team, hopefully that will open some social doors too.

Yea i do go to time... do you go there often??
