Hey does anyone know the clubs to go to for live music (not just indie, but rock and punk and metal and jazz etc) in loughborough? Also is there anywhere where student bands can perform? Maybe at the same clubs?
Cheers

not as far as I know. There is no "venue" as such, but leicester and nottingham are not far away. I know the baracuda bar sometimes hosts some bands, and every year on the May bank holiday there is a free mini-festival which has bands from the university playing in it, as well as a qualification about a month before. The bands from the university sometimes play on Thursdays at High Voltage(rock etc. night). Hope that helps. Its a bit annoying really that there is no venue. The union sometimes has some reasonably bigish bands playing there. Supergrass played last year. But nottingham Rock CIty has the majority of bands Big and small bands playing there.

Iklemarc,
I've just been thinking...isn't there a place just across the road from the Amber Rooms in town called MCB or something which is a "music bar"?? I've never been thought!

lol ok cheers for the help guys, im in a band back home (essex) but they are all going to different unis, i've been toying with the idea of forming another band while i'm at uni and it would be cool to play somewhere near. High voltage sounds a good bet, and that festival sounds great too!
It wouldn't be anything too heavy at all but hardly a pop band either lol: it would be all about having fun so the songs will probably be about random stuff but still good songs if you get what i mean (sort of musical humour while still being good music!)...fun for all the family lol

Bowling For Soup are playing at Union too, on 22nd Oct. Seems like at least for the beginning of the year, lots of good bands are playing there. which is really good.

Will have to pay, as its available to people from outside the uni, but £6 to go see a big band is really good anyway
I've been away for a while and gosh has this board blown up!!! LIVE MUSIC? I hear you say? Well, thats my area!!! I am the chair of Musician Society (MUSOC) and I work as a sound engineer at the Union. I'll keep my post short as I'm holiday at the moment (internet access is valuable).

Basically, the union will give the chance to new bands at appropriate times, we'd gladly help you guys. To play at High Voltage you need to be of standard but I believe the Thursday Night Accoustic stage has been moved to Monday nights and is now called The Lounge. To play at these gigs you basically need to speak to the right person and a demo always helps too!!! I can help you if you meet the right people and recruit new band members.

Barracuda Bar in town, I believe, will continue to run the Open Mike nights on Tuesday and the Union will also put some Open Mike Nights on too!!! For GOING to live gigs, nothing beats Loughborough Students Union but The Swan (a pub) in the Rushes also hold live events (check out www.pineapster.co.uk And the Orange Tree does one off live accoustic perfomances.

Being the chair of LSU Musoc I run FREEFEST, which is a free outdoor music festival where the best student bands are put on an outdoor stage to perform to the May Day crowd of students. This is the most awesome experience for a student band. In order to get through, you must past the audition which we hold in March...

Any more questions...feel free to ask me. The Union is my second home...I'm sure you'll find me :p:

Z

You'll be able to join up to everything at the freshers bazaar, it'l probs cost you something, but not much, and all the money goes back into the society. I think theres a new way of signing up this year though, through the lsu website. but you won't need to do that until the freshers bazaar, so don't worry. Again I might be wrong.
