oh very interesting thanks
is it just sex you abstain from? I thought abstinance was "abstaining from something", whether it be sex or something else.

Abstinence is not participating in something isn't it? But most commonly used relative to sex or voting (to abstain in this sense is to refrain from voting for or against).

the trait of abstaining (especially from alcohol)

act or practice of refraining from indulging an appetite

Aside from these meanings, most of the other definitions google gave me were basically "giving up sex".

So although it's used mainly with sex, it can be other things too.

not to be mean, but have you never heard of a dictionary?

Or, for that matter, typing define: abstinence into Google?

Most on here will attribute it to not having sex. For me it's got a strong connection to religion (Catholicism). Sex is one of them - which I'm not particularly bothered about as I have no girlfriend, but abstinence can also refer to fasting from food - for a day, or a longer period such as Lent....except I took that a bit far 3 years ago and have abstained from chocolate ever since.

Look it up in a dictionary or thesaurus and you'll find a multitude of meanings and usages.

Yes, same about the Catholic connections for me.
