Looking too young to get a job!!

Help!! I think I look too young to get a job!

Like today I went and asked in a little fancy dress shop which had a vacancy in the window 'saturday staff wanted'. So I went in and said 'HI, I'm just enquiring about the saturday job in the window'. The woman just laughed and said 'well you look very young, how old are you? When i said 16 she just went 'oh well we've only got vacancies for during the week now anyway so you'll be at school'...to which I replied 'no....college'. She was talking to me like a was a little girl of about 10!

It's so annoying! She didn't even give me a chance :frown:

Why oh why do I look so flippin young!! I was only wearing jeans and a pink t-shirt...nothing too young looking!

you get people like that i'm afraid! just have to learn to leave them to one side! to give yourself some confidence-try wearing heels and more make-up! thats what I keep telling myself!

Just keep trying and look for notices which specify WEEKEND vacancies. I got a job when I had just turned 16 but it is just a case of walking round and keep looking.

meh be happy when your 40 and still look 'younger' than you are :P

I have the exact opposite problem I look and act much older than I am and often when applying for part time work I am told all about full time opportunities or told that the hours may not be flexible enough for uni hours despite only being in college a few hours a day! Especially awkward in my current job in a restaurant, my supervisors keep telling me to get behind the bar because either I look old enough or they think I am old enough and I’m just skiving, but then the boss comes along and I get an ear bashing for it, but never mind.

They shouldn't be discriminating against you just because you look young- if you are 16 and available to work, thats all they need to know. Just keep looking, you will find something.

next time bring ID that will show them!
grr i hate it too wen ppl think im younger than I really am.
Just think - if they take that attititude <-oops, do you really wanna work for them?

I went for a job in a pub/restaurant and I said 'I'm 18' and she said 'really?!!' in a really shocked voice. But I got a job anyway, so just keep looking! It's taken me years to find a job but I've finally got one.

It's annoying isn't it!! I can understand them looking for an older person if it was for bar work or something where you really did need to be older, but for a flippin fancy dress shop? It's age descrimination :frown:

Oh well, I'll keep looking. It just makes me lose confidence becuase I think 'are other potential employers going to be put off by the fact that i look younger than I am?'

I have exactly the same problem. Some man in Greggs infuriated me. He just totally rediculed me. He said: "You look far too young, and was laughing like, really laughing. I felt a little hurt, and my temper got the better of me and i said: "Shut up, or i'll stick that pasty up your arse". And he stopped laughing. And i stormed out of Greggs. :]

Be happy you look younger than your age. This is much better than looking older or more mature. Because once you're older, say late 20s..you'll want to look 19.

it is probably better to look young rather than old!

i suppose you could put on make-up to look a bit older.

your gcse's are pretty good. so i'm thinking your comp. is not what alastair campbell would call a bog-standard comp.

lol.

"hello, can i have a job"

"hmm..."

"look, i have ID, i'm 16"

"oh, ok then. i'll start you on £20k a year with a company car"

Hmm, that sucks, try handing out CVs?

I've got quite a young face, but you can tell I'm older if that makes sense?! But when I was working at Accessorize, I got a load of extra shifts because I'd finished my exams (First Year exams), and one of the managers came over to me and said "Howcome you're working loads all of a sudden?" "Oh, i've just finished my exams and need the money" "Ooh right, so you've just done your GCSEs yeah?" "No actually mate, first year uni exams"

How embarassing!

I worked in Virgin Megastores and there was a guy there who was 17 and he looked about 12. Customers always used to ask us how old he was and accused us of illegally employing children! Once a primary school teacher asked about his age and then said I was lying, she taught children in year 6 and she could tell how old he was!
They shouldn't discriminate, but if appearance is of some importance you'll often they do it. The number of times my boss would not hire someone because of how relatively good looking they were astounded me. Lord knows why as he was an ugly git!
