Should I get braces and have 12 teeth on my upper jaw??

I want to get braces because I am not happy with my upper teeth, my two front teeth are sticking out. But the problem is that I have already had braces before, where they took out 4 of my teeth, upper and lower. I didn't wear my retainers, and now at 19 my teeth relapsed to the way they used to be  . But now I am so ****ing insecure about them and feel I HAVE to get braces. I just don’t feel like I look as good as I can look and it has just given me a pretty low self-confidence.
But the Orthodontist advised me against them because the say I don’t need them that much (they’re not the ones with the problem!), plus I would have to lose two further teeth on my upper jaw or have jaw surgery (something which is dangerous and I would never really consider). But I’m thinking, if I don’t have that much space between my teeth now, and I am going to need to take out teeth to make room for my wisdom tooth, then why not just go ahead and have two teeth removed? Plus is it really that unhealthy or detrimental to have 12 teeth? The expense is not that important to me, as the money will go somewhere else trivial anyways and its better for it to go towards fixing something I hate anyway. But would I be putting the health and comfort of my teeth at risk by removing 2 more teeth???

If you get braces at the age of 19 it would hurt a lot more- you remember how much it hurt the first time you ate something with your braces! Your teeth are stronger now, therefore you would have to have braces for a longer time, could you bare that?

I think I would have to. I am prepared to go through the pain as long as I get the results that I want. The only thing that is worrying is that I will have 12 teeth remaining on the top jaw. I just dont want to do something that is gonna affect me negatively long term.

If you honestly want your teeth to look like they did, I don't think it would do any harm to have less teeth. I am cleft palated and naturally have two less teeth; four more have been taken out to make room for bone grafting and braces. This has never done me any harm at all, so I don't really think it would be a problem.
And a word to the wise-
I've had my last set of braces (the third!) taken off now and have a retainer. So if you do decide to go for it, for God's sake try and wear the retainer this time. Its really not difficult.

[Edit: jaw surgery is not that dangerous, but you have to be 100% committed to the result and live with wired-together teeth and a liquid diet to make it work properly. If you weren't good about wearing a retainer, I'm not sure that you'd find this easy...]

Well shouldn't your dentist/orthodontist decide that?

Well, I got my braces off when I was 14, and I have matured much more then and realise the consequences of not wearing retainers, wheras then, I was foolish enough to think that the orthodontist was only exaggerating and that my teeth wouldn't really go back  Now I have to live with the consequences of being young and careless :frown: . I didn't mean jaw surgery was dangerous in that sense, just that many people are unhappy with the results, as it negatively changes their features in many cases.
When you say you've had you're last set of braces taken off, do you mean you've had braces on 3 times

Fonzievision, when I ask my orthodontist, all they can all tell me is that I dont really need it and "you're gonna have 12 teeth left to solve a minor problem!" Well, it isn't minor in my opinion and they've never really elaborated on why having that many teeth is such a problem. So I just wanted to ask in here to get the opinion of anyone who has had to have braces twice and be left with 12 teeth, or who knows about this topic.

It's fair enough getting a brace again, but what was the reason why you needed a brace in the first place. If the cause of your teeth being sticking out still exists, then you may well have a relapse again after a second round of treatment, thus effectively wasting money if you then feel like this again.

It may not be the case for you, but it may well be worth thinking about. I had a brace when I was younger due to me not sucking my thumb, but, having the same effect, pushing my toungue forward on my front teeth. Because I probably do it subconsciously when asleep, I did have a relapse and my teeth moved forward slightly.

Ok Say if you do this but you still dont get the results you want? Its a prety painful experience to go through, and although it may be perfectly explainable that it could turn out fine, it may not turn out exactly how you want them.. or if this is an even deeper issue of self-confidence it may just be a superficial change for you.

I have indeed had three different sets of braces. The first for a year when I was 9 to make the arch of my top teeth more even (moved the BONE - that was sore!). The second for two years when I was 13 to straighten my bottom teeth and the last for two and a half years at 17 to straighten all my teeth properly. And now its a couple of years of wearing retainers at night but I DON'T CARE cause now I'm free of the surgery!
I'm sorry for being so abrupt before... I tend to get frustrated when people whose teeth could be sorted out really easily mess it up! But if you want to go for it, its not really that painful, and its seems like you've learned your lesson. Relapses aren't that common when you wear your retainers afterwards - my teeth have been through hell and back and really haven't moved back at all.

I had my braces on from 1999 to 2005 and it was the best time of my life.

During the life of my braces, i had my first kiss.

Got pissed

Got laid

Got food stuck in them

Had multiple coloured bands

And ended up with nice teeth.

Now if thats braces got me, im even more excited about what my retainer will give.

Loool  I hope the braces have the same effect on me!! I cant wait till I have now actually! But the fact that it costs quite a chunk and that I will be wearing them in my first year of uni is a bit of a downer. Still, I'm planning only to get them near november anyway, hopefully I'll have saved up enough and found my feet at Uni (don't wanna be in pain in Fresher's week  )
