earrings - hypoallergenic stuff

arr, a nice boring thread for the morning:

basically, i got my ears pierced about 5 weeks ago, which means that next week i can wear normal earrings. when i got them done i was told that it would be a good idea to wear earrings made of a hypoallergenic metal when i first switched (e.g. something made of stainless steel etc), and i've decided to listen to the advice because i've got quite sensitive skin (and sensitive ears, actually) and i don't particularly want an infection. only problem is, i don't know wear to find the flipping things - particularly when i'm on a budget. the only thing i've managed to find is 'sterling silver' earrings. would those be made from a hypoallergenic metal? and, if not, where on earth can i get earrings that are?

If we're going to be fussy, the best thing to use for piercings is titanium. But I don't think you'll find titanium earrings. So the best thing to do is try different earrings, as some people react to silver, and some people don't.

But if you do buy really cheap earrings then try not to buy really cheap ones, and don't wear them for longer than necessary.

apparantly it's the nickel in some cheap earrings that makes people react, I know it's agony for me

Does it make your holes go blackish?

I know i'm allergic to silver and nickle, it never hurts, the holes just go black. But i hate gold, and people don't like buying me white gold as it gets expensive, so i wear silver for a day and it's fine.

If you like a certain pair of earrings that aren't the right metal, just wear them for an evening or something and they won't do much damage.

I think I'm allergic to all earrings apart from silver! Maybe gold too, but the supposedly gold earrings I had weren't and went funny. I even bought hypoallergenic ones and they were terrible and my ears went black!

yeh my ears used to go black as well, and a sorta greenish gunk is sometimes on the earrings when i take them out. i didnt think i had sensitive ears, think i must have just used really cheap earrings. i read somewhere (in one of my mums magazines i think!) that if u smear ur ears and/or the earring with vaseline/other non brand petroleum jelly before putting them in, it creates a sorta barrier and helps prevent this. its certainly worked for me!
