The Student Room Group

my first night out in leeds

this weekend a Leeds student and her flatmate took me out 2on the pi$$" around Leeds. ( you guys your great!) Just thought i would share what i found, most clubs are now really strict with ID, they said mine was invalid(connections pass card) and wouldn't let me in barely anywhere, but our NUS card will count when we get them. There are so many places to go for a night out in the city centre, but beware they are all pretty spread out so be preapared to walk back and forth and back and forth all night! There is a great little place called fab cafe but its not for everyone, it has displays of retro cartoon figures books etc and silly things like that, plays cheesy/random "rocky"-(help i need educating) songs and everyone, and they sell rainbow drops sweets and i think other random things like that! for people who liked to get a bit more dressed up and listen to chart music there are loads of clubs, with big scary bouncers, blasting out the latest dance/rnb, and lots of posh looking clubs for people who take the clubbing scene very seriously. Prices vary loads depending where you go, and as always a night out is what you make of it, and this weekend was great

do you know anything bout mahetyks wat its like?

majestyks is awful. seriously don't bother going there, its horrible!

as for id's i haven't found leeds to be tooo over the top, but i guess it depends where your going and what night of the week it is, and they're probly stricter at the mo. cos it school holidays etc. most places will only accept driving lisences and passports (oh and those 'prove it' cards)...at least that what we accepted at the place i worked. nus cards are often refused as id's cos they have been faked in the past and they don't actually have your date of birth on them so don't prove your age - just that you're a student (and you could have skipped a year/be from scotland etc).

Not always; there is no date of birth or anything to show your age on and it is probably better to take a piece of ID with your date of birth and a picture on. There are people at university who are 17 and some clubs do make sure you are 18 even if you look it.

my NUS card from nottingham has my date of birth on it...

My NUS card from school had my DOB on. Have they changed it? Are most of the bars and clubs in the city centre?
I loove fab cafe!!!! Also bassment is near there... tre cool  Long as you've got a provisional license you should be fine  I never got asked for id and i look fairly young anyway.. so must depend on certain nights

and baracuda
Yo pix whats up with riisa? had some pretty good nights there in my time =)
I go out in Leeds every weekend and cant wait till i'm actually living there...you cant get bored cos there's so many places to go to suit whatever mood ur in!

Risa aint bad!

I would recommend to all newbies to leeds a trip to the bottom end of town (as already said you will realise the nite life is quite spread out!).
Here a night could go like this..........Normans, Jakes's Bar (which the leeds guide voted as best bar 05-some debate about this though!) the revolution. Then at like 12+ head to TownHouse (3 floors-differnt music). Thats one night out.......down this end of town theres also Space (for some harder clubbers!) and fudge which is a cool bar.

As a student you may first see the top end of Town......which is all quite similar places I think. Avoid Baja, Creation and Majestics........lots of underage teens. But up here there is a Yates, Bourbons, Risa (as mentioned) Fab Cafe and Carpe Diem (a bit of indie rock). These are all good.

On the headrow (which is like a main street in the city centre) Life Bar and Baby Cream (celeb spot) are nice (little more "trendy" which equals some young business men on work nights out ect"

Hope that gives some of you a lil info...............but remember thats only my view!

im confused now as i don;t have a passport or license, and my "pass" card isn't counted as REAL id i was depending on the uni givin me some real id :bawling:
why dont u have a passport, i thort everyone had to have a passport! thats all iv got as id atm

the leeds uni student cards don't have your date of birth on them so u can't rely on using it as id. if you're worried about not having anything you would probably be best getting a photocard driving lisence cos its guaranteed to be accepted everywhere one it doesn't expire and i would guess that at some point in your life you'll learn to drive and will need one anyway.

in freshers week you'll be bombarded with flyers/magazines/guides to nights out in leeds, where you wanna go depends on what music you are into/wanna listen to. but for a basic guide....

If you want cheese try Baja or Bondi (which revolving dance floor!) any night of the week, Fruit Cupboard on a monday (for 80's classics), Creation on a wednesday (or any other night really cos they'll have 1 cheesey room, but the biggest student night is on wednesday), Fruity at Leeds Uni Union on a friday, The Poly Bop at Leeds met union on a saturday (if its still on, they kept messing about with it last year), or Evolution on a saturday (which is a big student night, tho its out of town so u need to get a taxi there)

If you want indie/rock/alternative try the Cockpit on a tuesday (punk, ska and metal), a wednesday (mainly indie), a friday (3 rooms of pure indie) or saturday (indie, rock and metal), the bassment on a thursday or friday...and maybes other nights altho i've not been (again they play mainly indie), bar phono has a lot of different nights which are mainly indie/rock/goth etc, check out the posters around it for whats on what night this year, Fuzzy Logic on a thursday is a really good indie night, it was at the Faversham last year but i'm not sure if its staying there or moving back to the think tank or wotty so check before you go, Star at the Met on a friday plays indie, punk, ska and metal and the fab cafe any night plays a really eclectic range of stuff and is really cool -altho its more of a bar than a club even if it does have a late lisence and a dance floor.

Erm....this is where my knowledge becomes a little thin but if you want R'n'B try Halo any night of the week, Bar Risa any night probably, The Fruit Cupboard on a thursday (with breakdancers!), Lovedough at Majestyks on a thursday.....most of places with cheesey nights like creation and fruity will have an r'n'b room....sure this is all pretty commercial stuff and there are better nights elsewhere but not being a fan i haven't looked them out

I definatly HAVE NOT covered everything/everywhere its just a quick off the top of my head guide to nights i've been to a bit. Oh and quite a few of the places mentioned above have a few different rooms with different music in each so u can find stuff to suit, ie creation plays mainly cheese but also has an r'n'b and indie room etc but i've put it down as cheese cos thats what the biggest room plays. And things may have changed location/night so don't blame me if you turn up for a punk-tastic ska fest and find yourself at a hardcore trance night or something :p:

send off for a provisional license? and NUS isn't proper ID, anyone can get hold of one; i have a notts trent NUS - doesn't prove my age, and i dont even study at NTU. You need passport or license.
or get a proof of age card, u can get the application forms from most off licences and shops

i wouldn't even bother with one of those, although they're meant to be accepted some bar/door staff are misinformed and have turned people away.
