Wear whatever you feel most comfortable in. Suits are not required.

I asked this cuz when the advisor said 'dress reasonably smartly is ok',he made 2 examples.one is 'shirt is ok,but not jeans, preferably trousers',but I don't know do ppl really dress like when they're going to the chapel?I mean, that plain black suit plus skirt is kind of boring (at least I think so-_-b....)

Some of us wear suits for school, so it will be normal for an interview. Plus you can't go wrong with a suit: your definition of casual may vary greatly from that of admissions tutors, which could lead to a bad impression.

Reply 4

thx for advise and I think I am going to abandon my 'eland sweater and jeans' idea, hehe

Reply 5

I know people who wore jeans to their interview. Honestly, if you're comfortable you'll perform better at interview. No applicant to my college has ever been rejected on the basis of their attire. Which college are you thinking of?

Reply 6

I like Gonville and Caius but then ppl say that it's hard to get into and (NOT offending..)ppl there might be a bit unfriendly...

Reply 7

I know some friendly people at Caius! It is a bit traditional though, so something smart would probably be best. Trousers/smart skirt, nice shoes and a blouse would be fine, or a shirt, tie and trousers if you're a man.

Reply 8

I wore a suit for Interview, and most people did too, so you won't be alone!

Well, I went in my suit because it was the done thing at school but I know a lot of people who didn't. If I didn't go in my suit though, I would still have dressed smartly - trousers and either a shirt or a nice jumper (being December, Cambridge is Arctic).

Personally I wouldn't recommend jeans unless you genuinely feel uncomfortable in something smarter, but each to their own in the end.

Just look in the smart/casual section on the Next website for inspiration

I don't think it's a huge issue - I wore jeans and a shirt to my interviews and got offered a place, but some people were in suits.

As said, wear what you feel comfortable in, within reason. I wouldn't, for example, recommend wearing skater-style ripped jeans!

The tutors honestly don't base their decision on clothes, but it can't hurt to make a good impression, so definitely smart/ smart-casual.

At my interview the people in suits looked really out of place, and people went for their interviews in all kinds of clothes.

Anywya, half the problem of looking smart is having reasonably 'styled' hair, and I'm afraid the Oxford I saw was sorely lacking in terms of that.

hey guys,I want to aply for Cam Economics and we've just had a session abotu interviews, people say that 'u'll have to dress reasonably formally and smart',but I'm not sure about what that means??is pullovers and jeans ok or do we have to wear suits?I mean,if I wear suits and realize that I'm the only one wearing that formally it could be a bit embarrasing and I'll probably feels really bad I suppose?

 Pullover and jeans is NOT ok! You don't have to wear a suit but I really hope you were joking about wearing jeans..

Reply 14

There were people at my college interviews who wore suits as well but I don't think its necessary, although I wouldn't recommend jeans. I just wore a skirt, top and big warm coat as it was baltic at the time!

Umm, I know plenty of people who wore jeans and got in... what are your credentials, exactly? (a quick glance at your profile says you're still at school)

I wore jeans. Black jeans with a white t-shirt and a suit jacket. I possibly wore ankle boots with pointed toes, but I can't really remember to be honest. Jeans can look smart-casual you know?

Yeah fair enough. The main thing is whatever you feel most comfortable in so you feel as relaxed as possible in the interview - the outcome doesn't depend on how smart you look.

I got rejected one year in a jacket and tie with nice shirt, black shoes etc , but the next year I wore jeans, a shirt that cant really have a tie which was unbuttoned at the collar and a corded jacket and got in. dont think it makes any difference

I agree - an E&Mist I was talking with wore a suit to his first interview, but toned it down for his second because no-one else was wearing one.

I saw loads of people go in jeans, but myself wore trousers and a shirt/jumper combo as it was freezing!
