you could rub an ointment cointaining "heparin" onto your skin, will speed up the "breaking up" process of the bruises, but not take away the pain.
Leeches are very good aparrently.

Arnica is very good for bruising, you can get it from health shops and think boots have it in tablets and cream now too
witch hazel is fantastic - works best if you dab it on straight after bumping yourself but it really does seem to cut down on the amount of bruise.

Arnica is indeed fabby stuff!
I'm shocked. I didn't think that there was anything you could do. You learn something new everyday!

I remember when my brother was about 2 he banged his head and someone told my Mam that butter helps, so anyway...there he was bawling away and completely smothered in butter....and it didn't help at all.

So the moral of the story is, butter is only to be used for eating

Cheap method:

Put a bag of ice or peas on it for 2 mins, then something warm, (like run a towel under hot water and then wring it and put it on the bruise for 2 mins). Keep doing this one after the other, and it will help make the bruise disappear faster!

Leeches produce heparin to keep the blood from congealing.

They will also suck out all the blood from under the skin.
