Upper ear cartilage piercing...advice needed!

Hi I got my upper ear cartilage pierced about three weeks ago. I go back to college tomorrow and can't have it in for school...I'm waiting for a small see-through stud to wear but it won't come for a few days.

If I take the ring I have out tomorrow morning and then put it back in after school, will it be OK? Some people ahve told me that it will close up during the day unless something's in it?

I'm also kind of worried about changing it coz the area is quite tender at the moment; is this normal? I clean it twice daily with solution. Any other healing tips?

Sorry for all the questions but I'm new to piercings!

Thanx in advance!

You need to leave your piercing in untill the area has had time to heal properly. If you choose to take it out for school, the hole will not heal up, but it will be extremly painful to put your earing back into.
I dont know where you come from, but if it is the uk, I have always bathed my piercings, and I have many lol In something called Savlon Wound Wash, its a spray. When sprayed on to the area it cleanses the places you cant reach with a cotton bud.

DONT take it out!! just put a plaster over it or something untill u get the new one.

i took mine out while it was healing and it almost closed over (not like properly healing) after a few hours, it was VERY painful trying to get my peircing back in, lotsa blood...:frown:

good luck with it, took mine a year to heal!

i cleaned mine with superdrug surgical spirit, although it HURTS! it works!

I have my ear pierced twice at the the top, and after 3 weeks its still not going to be healed so i would leave it for a month atleast before you take it out for a long period of time. I cleaned both of mine with salt water, just boil water in the kettle put salt in it and let it cool down. When cool enough just clean it with cottonbuds. Has worked for me everytime :smile:Good luck!

You need to leave the same jewellery in for at least 6 weeks. If you needed to change it before then you should've thought about that before.

It might close up if you take it out during the day. If it does, don't force it through. You'll need to leave it to fully heal and have it repierced. Also, you're leaving it more open to infection if you put it back in.

The best thing to do is leave the existing jewellery in. If you can't, you should retire the piercing and learn more before getting a new one.

Leave it in until the retainer arrives?

usually you can get away with it, just get a note from your mum

OK guys thanks for the advice, though its not really what I was hoping for.

I have another problem though.....I just tried to take it out and don't know how! lol im such an amateur.....the ring I have is a ball closure ring identical to the second item down on this page http://www.jobananas.com/acatalog/1.6mm_Ball_closure_rings_bcr_captive_bead.html

I assume I just need to pull the ring apart to release the ball?

You need some clean pliers. Then, pull the ring apart slightly to release the ball. You'd be best doing it over a towel to catch the ball.

But remember, if you take it out it shouldn't go back in.

You could hide the piercing with your hair...That's what I did!

I've just read this again, and I think you're gonna be replacing the stud with a plastic one. If so, please just cut your ear off as it will be quicker, cheaper and achieve the same result.

Im a guy and my hair isnt long enough at the moment!

Ure right I didnt think it through that well....if i'm lucky this thing will arrive in the post tomorrow and i can change it in time, being really careful that everything is sterile.

EDIT: Juno what do u mean? Why would a plastic stud be any less sterile than a metal ring?

It's probably PTFE, nothing wrong at all.

Its the second thing down on this page....

http://www.jobananas.com/acatalog/Bioflex_Piercing.html

U just chop it to size and slip the one of the disc from further down that page on....

Juno uve got me worried now! It does say its suitable for initial piergings.

Retainers, which this sounds like, are not suitable for use in new piercings. And ear cartilege piercings are tricky to heal when looked after correctly, which this is definitely not.

Good. It means I'm doing something right.

Don't get piercings if you're not prepared to look after them properly.

i wouldn't trust those discs thing, but it does mention PTFE which is safe and used widely. i think it'll be fine, ring your studio if you have any questions though!

but as said, don't take advice on here as gospel, always ask a pro!

A google search reveals it's not PTFE, so I wouldn't trust it.

Who's fault is it then, Santa's?! There's loads of information available on the internet if you look for it, so you should've done your research.
